Amatsu heard the greetings coming from the guards and smiled to himself derisively. It seemed these fools had deluded themselves into believing that the army which had previously engaged them was as good as dead, and couldn’t fathom that this lone person approaching could be of any threat, much less the leader of the armies going against them.

How easy it would be to end this with one spell; already, Amatsu could feel the devil ring on his finger humming with power; ready to be used. But this would be counterproductive, the devil ring would destroy the city, not capture it. And thus, Amatsu restrained himself. Of course, that did*’t mean he wasn’t going to have an easy time of dealing with this city. With any luck, he could wipe out its defenses without expending troops.

This in mind, he stopped a short distance from the gates of the city, and said, “Remember our contract and abide by my call, thou Prince of Rage. Awaken now from fitful sleep, come forth from thy palace in the inferno, and rain thy wrath upon my enemies.”

As he spoke, several arrows were sent at Amatsu; apparently, the Deva were not so stupid that they wouldn’t notice him casting a spell. The arrows fell short though, and the spell was complete.

A plume of black flame shot from the bowels of the earth, burning away even stone that got in its path. When the flame had subsided, there was a man standing before Amatsu; he was tall and muscular, dressed in a suit the color of ash with red trim, possesing eyes that looked like smoldering coals, and bright red, unkempt hair.

“Amon Irae, one of the Seven Demons, the Nails by which Pandaemonium is held together,” the man said with a bow. “I am at your service, Master.”

“Amon,” said Amatsu, “Destroy the gate of this city, so that my armies may pass unimpeded.”

“With pleasure, master,” replied the demon, walking up to the gate.

One of the braver guards, keeping his wits about him, fired an arrow at the demon. The arrows’ aim was true, and seemed bound to strike its target’s forehead. However, once within several feet, it suddenly caught ablaze and was reduced to cinders. Amon, however, seemed to notice, for he turned to the guard who had fired the arrow and said, “Let me show you what happens to people who oppose me.”

Before the guard could react, a ball of fire appeared in Amon’s hand and was thrown at the guard with such tremendous force that he was knocked back to the edge of the wall. Upon hitting, the ball seemed to explode, engulfing the guard in flames, but not killing him immediately.

The other guards couldn’t help but watch as their comrade, screaming in agony, tried in vain to put out the flames which were slowly consuming his body until he was reduced to a charred corpse.

Taking advantage of the guard’s distraction, Amon made his way to the gate and gave it a solid punch. The gate, although made of wrought iron and five times as tall as Amon, severely dented in the first blow, and was almost knocked off its hinges. With the second punch, it was actually sent flying into the city, damaging several homes, whilst killing and injuring any civilians unfortunate enough to be in its path.

“Anything else?” asked Amon.

Amatsu opened his mouth to tell him no and dismiss him, but before he could speak, a thin, mist-like substance formed a dome around the city. Amatsu was puzzled by this until he noticed a small, cloaked group standing a ways inside the city, within site of the broken gate.

“Of course,” he sighed, “Asura mages. Amon, do something about that barrier, having the gate open means nothing if a barrier still stands between my armies and the city.”

“Sheesh, why me?” groaned Amon, punching the barrier as he did so. The mages flinched when the punch hit, but the barrier did*’t budge. “This will take a while,” Amon complained.

“Keep at it,” ordered Amatsu, “Every hit exhausts those mages; eventually they’ll cave in to that exhaustion and the barrier will fall.”

“I know that,” Amon muttered to himself. “It just takes too damn long.”

The demons made their way toward the palace of the Sun King, each overcome with eagerness as they sensed themselves drawing nearer to their prey. It had become apparent when they met up that one of their number had fallen, but this was of little concern to the others. Since each of them regarded all the others as inferior to itself, they each dismissed the falling of their fourth companion as due to its own impotence, and each continued to regard itself as the superior demon among the group.

This was predictable. Demons are practically immortal, smarter, more powerful, and wiser than the vast majority of humans, but nonetheless possess two weaknesses: the first and better known weakness is their aversion to sacred objects. A sacred weapon or spell can slice straight through a demon, or nullify its magic. The second weakness is a bit less known; a demon’s arrogance. Each demon, well aware of its superiority to the average members of the mortal races, has an inordinate tendency to regard itself as far above and beyond those petty little mortals, and thus tends to underestimate them.

Most of the time, this doesn’t matter; a demon’s vast power more than makes up for its overconfidence. There are times, though, when a demon will find itself up against powerful enemy, who uses this overconfidence to win a battle with ease.

This was why none of the demons noticed Tyr hiding in the shadows until eight knives shot through one of their number, striking its soul orb directly and shattering it, thereby forcing the demon to flee.

Without hesitating, one of the surviving demons dashed toward Tyr, only to be struck by a Deva soldier who had just risen off the ground. The demon hissed furiously and cut into the Deva’s chest, reaching for its soul. To the demon’s surprise, is seemed this Deva had two souls, one of which drifted away, the other of which almost seemed to jump away when the demon struck the Deva’s body.

While the first demon was pondering this, another unconscious Deva stood up and attacked the second demon, missing the demon’s soul orb by mere centimeters. This second demon was also quick to react, snapping the Deva’s sword arm within moments of being attacked. As soon as his sword arm had been broken, the Deva collapsed onto the ground, and the demon caught a glimpse of something moving in the astral plane. Looking at its companion, the demon quickly voiced its thoughts in one of the ancient languages, and quickly received the other’s agreement.

Falling back, the demon waited patiently for another Deva to stand up, and when one did so, it jumped from the soul orb and entered the Deva’s body. The soul orb itself, now empty, fell to the ground and shattered.

It took the demon a few moments to get its bearings, but quickly found itself in a large area that looked like one of Muspellheim’s jungles.

“You’re either brave or stupid,” a voice called out.

The demon quickly located the source of the voice; a young man leaning up against a tree.

“Are you sure it’s smart to follow a Baku into a dream?” asked the young man, smiling, “I don’t think you know what you’re in for.”

The demon snorted in response. Here, in a dream, uninhibited by the laws of the universe, it knew it could use far more of its power. With this in mind, it increased in size, becoming a monstrosity of claws, muscle, and bone. Then it looked down at the young man, expecting to see him cower in fear. It was therefore surprised to see him laughing instead.

While the demon was trying to figure out whether the young man had been driven insane by fear, it heard a loud trumpet call, followed by a sound of fluttering, as if a multitude of birds was approaching. Now more confused, it turned and found itself facing a legion of Deva knights.

“Forgot whose dream this was?” asked Ayumu, “These Deva all have delusions of grandeur that make them want to take part in some ‘glorious battle’ or another. And of course, a large vicious monster makes for a great opponent. But hey, there is good news; I won’t be getting involved, just watching. So have fun.”

Fuming at being lured into a trap, the demon turned to face the legion of Deva, swearing to deal with the Baku who had lured it here once it was done.

Interesting. Looks like a keep them watching one hand while the other hand does the work tactic. I'm glad you finally added. I can't wait for more. Sorry I haven't posted more. I finally got an actual job and have been working a lot of hours because we don't have enough people. What took you so long to add anyway?
