And it had gotten worse. Lord Avias had heard that Archduke Raven had contacted the two Archduchesses, but rather than reminding them of their place as women, had apparently begun supporting them. Secretly, many of the nobility had discussed the possibility that devil magic was being used to control the Archduke. On his part, Lord Avias thought that, as ambitious as he was, Archduke Raven had realized that he could use the Archduchesses' armies to weaken the standing of the other twelve, then when power was split between him and the Archduchesses, he could easily trick them into handing their power over to him; after all, they were just women, and it was common knowledge that women were not skilled in matters of state.

Which is why the control of the Stork and Harrier territories should not have been turned over to women rulers in the first place, Lord Avias mused bitterly. Situated as his land was near the Osprey-Raven border, Archduke Osprey had given Lord Avias the task of ensuring that war did not break out the two. Which would have been so much easier, had Archduke Raven had used sense in selecting the successor to the late Lord Varion, who had been Archduke Raven's former lord for the border, but perhaps in a gesture toward Stork and Harrier, or perhaps for “favors* that had been performed for him, Lord Raven had selected a woman as the new Lady Varion. Which of course meant Lord Avias couldn't use sense with his counterpart in Raven. And to make matters worse, she seemed to be arrogant enough to take offense for every letter Avias sent her which she considered “condescending.”

And that, Lord Avias would happily tell anyone, was why women should stay in the business of rearing children and looking after their husbands.

Having finished his diplomatic letter, the Tenzoku lord stood up and stretched before turning to his wife. At least she could get his mind off of the affairs of state during the resting hours. However, it seemed that fate had something against Lord Avias, for even as he reached his bed, there was a light knock on his door.

“What now?* demanded Avias.

“My lord...” said a soft voice, “Something... unusual has happened... the guards have found visitors that are not of this world...”

Visitors from another world?! Lord Avias' shock was apparent. As if he didn't have enough problems, now something like this happened.

“I'm sorry cupcake,” he sighed, kissing his wife softly on the forehead, “It seems I must attend to affairs of state. Please be patient.”

“I understand dear,” sighed his wife, “Please do not be long.”

With a light groan, Lord Avias turned and walked to his door. Opening it, he found one of his female servants, wearing a very revealing maid uniform. He smirked slightly, at least he could enjoy the sights when he was interrupted.

“Inform my... guests, that I will meet with them in the audience hall,” ordered Lord Avias.

“As you wish, my lord,” said the servant, bowing deeply before she made her way to the throne room.

“So, what can we expect from this Lord Avias?” Nick questioned.

“The Tenzoku are a proud and honorable people,” replied Dionysius, eying the marble walls around him with mild envy, “That is why I had Saradomin grant us a letter explaining our cause.”

“So they will help us?” asked Tony.

“Not for free,” answered Zenevivia, “The air in this land runs thick with intrigue. Something is happening, and the nobles are troubled. Those guards that found us when we arrived were on active patrol, odd, considering that this world is united under one government, and thus is rarely attacked.

Furthermore, you saw how those guards paid inordinate amounts of attention to myself and Esther? That is unusual, seeing as the Tenzoku are a race of chauvinists who would not normally think twice about what a woman does.*

*What do you suppose is going on?” asked Tony.

“Given that they were more suspicions of us because there are women in our group, one of whom radiates magical power,” said Dionysius, sneaking a loving glance at Zenevivia, “I'd say that either the Mazoku finally got fed up with having their young kidnapped and sold as slaves, or that there are rumors to that extent. And thus, the Tenzoku are on the look out for Mazoku spies and assassins.”

“I have a feeling this “Lord Avias” will be able to tell us more,” commented Zenevivia, “But Esther, you and I are to remain silent through these discussions. The Tenzoku expect that women will only be traveling with men if they are those mens' attendants or consorts. Either way, we are expected to be little more than ornaments, and ornaments don't talk or have opinions.” Under her breath Zenevivia added, “But they better not push it, or they might find that this “ornament” is actually pretty damn dangerous.”

Dionysius apparently heard this last part, because he chuckled softly to himself and whispered, “Now Zinny, let's try to wait until we at least know where the Weapon is before you massacre the castle's inhabitants.”

“I'll try, but my patience for sophistry is limited,” Zenevivia whispered back.

“Excuse me sirs,” commented a Tenzoku clad in silver armor, “But his lordship is ready to have audience with you.”

Zenevivia twitched, clearly disliking the fact that she had just been ignored. But to her credit, she kept her emotions in check and allowed herself to be led into the audience chamber of Lord Avias.

The chamber looked more like it belonged in an ancient temple than a palace. There was only one wall, which Lord Avias' throne was backed up against. In place of the other three walls were rows of marble columns trimmed with gold. Which allowed the Saradominist group to peer into the “chamber” as they were led through the gardens surrounding it, and once inside allowed them to view the gardens, and nine of Muspellheim's twelve smaller suns, which each hovered a small distance above the horizon. It was these that gave Muspellheim it's endless day, and its unchanging warm climate, the combination of which had turned the majority of the Aither's favored world into a dense, but beautiful jungle.

While Esther and Tony took in the sights, Nick was quick to seek out Lord Avias; the Tenzoku noble was seated upon his throne, and unlike his guards who wore heavy armor, Avias was actually dressed in a way befitting the stifling warmth. He wore little more than a red toga, which exposed most of his chiseled, muscular torso. And sat upon his throne in a way that suggested boredom, his hand resting on the hilt of a jeweled sword, and his wings drooping ever so slightly. Nick was surprised to see that the Tenzoku noble did not look older than his early twenties, unaware as he was that while the Tenzoku reach their prime quickly, they often take over a century to show signs of old age, and seemed to jump directly from youth to advance age, without going through the middle-age humans were accustomed too.

Avias watched with disinterest as the group of otherworlders made their way into his audience hall. Two people so old that they should be in the sending house, and two young men, both of whom seem decently strong, for humans. Finally the consort, of one, or perhaps both the boys. This hardly seemed worth dealing with during resting hours, but nonetheless, Avias was a host, so he had to show proper courtesy.

“Welcome to my home world-travelers,” he greeted, “Pray tell, what brings you to my humble abode?”

“We have been sent from a land called Gielinor on behalf of its god of light,” answered the old man leading the group, “He wishes for us to retrieve a sword that was brought from Gielinor to this world.”

At this, a look of shock crossed Avias' faced, and several of his guards flinched. Seeing this, Zenevivia, Dionysius, and Nick exchanged looks. Avias quickly thought through the situation, he was reluctant to open the sealed door, but... he could very possibly benefit from this turn of events.

*I think I know the sword of which you speak,” said Avias, drawing questioning looks from his guards. “And I would tell you of its location... however... it is in a dangerous place... so before that, would you submit yourselves to a test, of sorts?”

Dionysius and Zenevivia exchanged knowing looks before Dionysius asked, “What kind of a test did you have in mind?”

Lord Avias smiled, it seemed things were finally going his way. And with only a moment's hesitation he began to explain what kind of “test” he expected them to fulfill.

An excellent add Niht. :)
I love how you can make a scene that is detailed, portrays the characters well, and shows people that not everyone has an open and balanced approach to race and gender.

Publicly, I don't support prejudice against women (My private life is my business and mine alone). Once again, a brilliant add and I look forward to seeing this 'test'...

EDIT: I made an embarassing lapse in this post, which has since been removed. I misunderstood the meaning of 'consort'. I haven't seen the word in use for a while, and messed it up with a similar, but different meaning word. ^_^ :@

Dogone... there is something you should know about Niht, he is extremely curious... and as such now wants to know what word you mixed up "consort" with and what you said. Come on, please? It'll bug me all day if you don't. :( "He appears in the Form of a Man with many Countenances; and he hath a Book in his right hand. The kind of woman high ranking warriors take into battle with them.
*cpughs*sounds like concorde*coughs*

oh, and nice 3rd person talk.

I took Lord Avias' mention of Esther as a 'consort' (least I think it was Esther) was your way of coupling her with Nick. Stupid really ^_^

Though, if you do intend to hook him up with someone, be wary. Nick is very old-fashioned, marriage first and all that, and he might already be in a relationship...

Jumping away from an awkward topic, what do you think of my signature?
It's a quote from Noe, God of Darkness and Chaos, master of the blade, whose symbol is the devious, cunning raven.
Plus I'm starting Chapter Two of Story of a Traveller soon!
Also, I've noticed you usually answer the day after I post. So I've probably already bugged you all day. Sorry. :(
