Then, without a single word or gesture of warning, the circle that had been spreading around her, the circle that the knights were charging into, erupted skyward. A gigantic tower of flame, rising upward from the outer line of flame that had formed * so in a twenty-foot radius around the pyromistress * shot nearly one hundred feet into the air, most likely immolating any of the knights that were unlucky enough to have been the ones charging through the circle. Even if they did*’t die, short of divine protection they wouldn’t be getting out with any less than some very serious burns.
That wasn’t the extent of what she was doing, though, and was in fact not even the main event. It was an excellent overture for the scene that it was heralding, one that led seamlessly from the fire priestess’s first act into the second. She could have done either without the other, but the two placed together made for such an excellent show that she couldn’t resist. It would allow anyone nearby, and perhaps everyone in the entire town, to know that she was here.
When the tower of flame dissipated after several moments, any of the knights that were still alive, as well as any of the adventurers that were still watching where she had been, would be able to see that she was no longer in the center of where the tower had risen. In fact, she was nowhere nearby on the ground, and couldn’t be found anywhere.
It was when they looked up that they would be able to see something new, something that had not been there moments before. Something was flying in the air above them, great wings sending tongues of flame out with every flap, plumage looking to be made of flame itself. It held itself in place thirty feet above them, above the spot where the epicenter of the tower had been located. The red-orange glow that it emanated shone out in the darkness of night, illuminating the surrounding area as it surveyed those below it with the eyes of one about to dive for their prey below.
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.
