“So what is it?” Azura asked.

Pikkupstix rubbed his brow in confusion as he beheld the strange stone pillar in the middle of Taverely. It had been a few days since the pillars had appeared in various places all over the world, much to Aiden and Caden’s amusement. Many times did the brothers attempt to hack away at it in the belief that they were similar to the Ivory Ork Statues in Zanaris, and all accounts so far had ended in failure as either their weapons had become chipped, or the material was enchanted against physical and magical attacks in the first place.

So, they had gone to the old summoner in an attempt to find out just what the pillars were. Azura’s logic was that maybe they were a new type of obelisk that began to appear thanks to an unknown power reactivating itself, but so far even Pikkupstix seemed to be at a loss of answers.

“Well,” Pikkupstix began as he stroked his dark beard. The summoner wore a druidic smock which covered his entire body, which made the many natural yet twisting designs embroidered on it seem natural enough to have been crafted straight from the earth itself.

“It’s a new living statue isn’t it?” Caden asked as his brother nodded in agreement.

“No," Pikkupstix replied, narrowing his eyes in annoyance at the two brothers.

“Aw,” Aiden said. “I was kinda hoping that it would be. That Snapdragon seed was pretty good.”

Pikkupstix regarded Aiden with a grin. “Way to go, you fool,” he said. “Snapdragon seeds are more addictive than…well, anything, really.”

“At least that explains why I keep getting the urge to eat one,” Aiden remarked.

Pikkupstix ignored Aiden as he turned back to study the pillar. The stone edifice stood in the middle of Taverley’s town square, which was north of the herblore supply shop and south of the Guthixian altar run by Sanfew.

“Well, Azura was right about one thing,” he said at last. “I do sense a strange energy similar to the kind that allows summoners to draw spirits from their plane of origin and into our world.”

“So it’s a summoning obelisk?” Azura asked.

“Not necessarily. It’s missing a certain magical field that flows around normal summoning obelisks. You know, the kind that binds the spirits to the pouches and renews our power.”

“That makes no sense,” Azura said. “How can it have summoning energy and not be a summoning obelisk?”

“The same way that the undead aren’t living, but aren’t dead either,” the summoner answered. “It technically has the energy field required to qualify it as an obelisk for summoning, but it’s missing that one thing that qualifies it as a true summoning obelisk. In this case, if someone could add the missing magical field, we technically would be able to use it to create pouches for summoning use.”

“So does it do anything?” Caden asked as he walked around the pillar.

“I’m certain it does,” Pikkupstix said. “As I said, it has the energy field required to summon something. But we can’t harness it."

"But someone else probably can,” Azura said.

“If we can find them,” Aiden muttered.

To everyone’s surprise, the obelisk began glowing, bathing itself entirely in red electricity. Azura was a little too close as the energy arched into the air, and a small spark singed her arm, causing her to let out a little yelp.

“Hey, you alright?” Aiden asked. But Azura found that she couldn't answer, for she suddenly felt herself being lifted into the air, and her body spun to face a direction that she couldn’t make out thanks to the pain wracking her body.

She heard Caden and Aiden call out for her as she saw Pikkupstix lift into the air and face the same direction she did, and apparently the old summoner was experiencing the same pain as well. The next thing she knew, her sight began to darken just enough so she could make out what appeared to be two golden orbs floating in the middle of the air.

“A…Dreamer,” she heard an ancient voice say. Azura couldn’t answer the voice, but it continued after a somewhat long pause anyway. “Ah…it has been touched by the Fade Realm. I see it now."

What? Azura wondered. She had never heard of the Fade Realm before, but it seemed to ring a bell in her mind for some odd reason.

“Hmph,” the voice said as the orbs began to narrow themselves into slits fit for an archer defending a castle. “I suppose this little game of Belial's remains to be seen to its conclusion after all."

Azura’s vision returned to normal as she felt herself drop to the ground, and the pain seemed to fade away as quickly as it came. She looked over at Pikkupstix, who seemed to be alright. Except for his glowing red eyes, that is.

V ran down the hill to meet the killer’s group. He came up on a gangly youth with brown hair in black mage’s robes first, and jumped onto his shoulders. The undead forced his weight into the mage, and drove him to the ground as he propelled himself into a nearby female archer, who dropped her bow as she dove to the ground at the sight of the red-garbed man sailing right at her.

V snarled a word of necromantic power as he rolled into a crouch, and released a wave of crackling black electricity. The armored warriors were the first of the group to fall to the ground, save for the dark skinned youth who had ordered the attack in the first place.

“Nice trick, boy," the youth sneered.

“I find that highly ironic from the same one who’s a lot younger than I am,” V retorted as he kicked a nearby archer, shattering his ribs in the process.

The youth said nothing as he lunged at V with a sword made from blackened steel, which the undead had no problem dodging. He tricked the youth into killing one of his own mages on accident, but a bolt of fire slammed into his back as he attempted to rush the bullyblade . V felt the heat from his cape as it began to catch fire, and he dropped to the ground and rolled into the feet of a nearby mage who had begun to saunter over to finish the undead off.

Looking up, V saw that the female mage had a red gleam in her eyes, which reminded him of his blue robed benefactor. He became suspicious when the mage didn't attack, and when he got to his feet he saw why. The entire group was floating in the air, their bodies facing the east as if they no longer controlled their own movements.

"What the hell is going on now?” he muttered to himself.

The earth began to shake, and V began hopping over cracks as they had appeared in the earth itself. A massive chunk of earth and rock shot out from one of the cracks, and it shook extra dirt from its form as its body began to grow closer and closer to that of a rocky humanoid.

“Guess who’s back?!” Grim shouted as he pulverized a floating archer close to him. The bullyblades had fallen to the ground shortly after the elemental’s arrival, and they seemed stunned at the sight of him in their midst.

“Don’t worry guys,” the dark skinned youth cried as he began circling Grim. “We can take this damn thing down if we work together!”

“Damn kids these days,” Grim muttered as he batted a pair of mages to the ground. The crystals embedded in his skin began to glow as he froze in the middle of a swing. “Cripes, what now?!” he screamed as he tried to move.

V was about to say something until he heard the scream of an ice spell ring in his ears. He looked to the hill, and saw a pale, translucent form floating above the ground. He couldn’t make out many details, but he saw that the figure seemed to be a ghost of sorts. Its maimed face showed signs of obvious pain, as did its body, which seemed to have been horribly slashed at some point.

The dark skinned bullyblade turned to the hill, and fear filled his eyes. “A revenant?!” he shouted.

The ghostly form descended the hill and waded into the fray. Twin curved blades snapped into existence as the surviving mages and archers attempted to make a valiant stand against the angry spirit. But mortal weapons and magic were of little use against something that was already dead, much less incorporeal, and soon enough only the dark skinned youth was left standing in wide eyed terror among his fallen comrades.

“Ah hell,” the bullyblade said as he realized he was outnumbered and outpowered.

“Hell,” the revenant said. “Is not here.”

“I don’ even wanna know what the hell is goin’ on here,” Grim muttered as he backed away from the spirit, finally free from whatever magic had paralyzed him before.

V wanted to say something, but he was truly lost for words. Just what was going on here anyway? The bullyblade began to make his way back toward the hill, but the revenant froze him in place with a dart of ice.

“Your sins,” the spirit said. “Are now judged.” The spirit’s blades flashed through the youth, who fell to ground lifelessly as his eyes rolled back in their sockets.

V looked up, and saw Alice standing at the hill's peak looking at the proceedings with horror in her eyes. He began walking towards her, motioning for Grim to stay with the spirit.

“I’m sorry you had to see that,” he said as he reached the girl.

“Wh-just what the hell happened?” she asked, obviously in shock from seeing her friends effortlessly cut down right in front of her eyes.

“I’m not sure myself,” V replied. “But I have the feeling that if you leave now and never return to this cursed place, you may not meet the same fate as they did.”

Alice fell to her knees and began to cry as the reality of the situation sunk in. Confused, V wrapped his cloak around her, and sat next to the statue as the girl continued whatever sort of breakdown she was going through.

“I-I never wanted to do this,” she wailed. “I didn't want any of it…”

“So...then why did you do it? Whatever 'it' was?” V asked. “I mean, for someone to have a hero as a role model yet do things that villains and criminals are known for doesn’t seem*well, smart.”

“It was because of…of…of Michael,” Alice said. “He…when I was little my parents died in a fire. I had nowhere to go, so I lived on the streets of Falador for a while. I picked up some basic fighting skills, and Michael noticed me when I knocked a few of his goons on their ass when they tried mugging me one day.”

V winced as he heard the girl’s tale. He had seen his own share of horrors in his time of existence, but for a girl to go through what she did and not end up dead within a week was nothing short of miraculous.

“So...who’s Michael?” V asked as the girl began to calm down.

“That black skinned guy,” she answered. “He was the leader of the group. The Reapers, they called themselves. A really bad leader, but others followed him out of fear. Or because they knew he would get them money.”

“Well,” V began. “He’s dead now. So why not just leave?”

“But where would I go?” Alice asked. “For the past ten years all I’ve known was life with the Reapers, and now that just went up in flames in less than two minutes!”

V looked up at the statue of Camorra. “Why not be like her?” he asked as he pointed at the statue.

“What? How?” Alice asked.

“I’m not sure,” V admitted. “But you’ve said that you always wanted to be like that...Camorra...woman. A hero. So why not try to be one by turning over a new leaf?”

“But how? It’s not like there’s any job postings for heroes or anything!”

“As I said, I’m not sure,” V said. “But really now…I’ve fought alongside heroes before the God Wars even broke out. I’ve fought alongside heroes during the early days of the God Wars, and I’m sure I’ll fight alongside even more heroes before my job here is yet done. One thing they’ve all had in common was the fact that they all had a cause to fight for, or at least a driving force behind their acts. Maybe you just have to find what drives you before things will get better.”

Alice sniffed. "I-I don’t know…”

“Fine,” V said as he stood up. “Don’t know then. Just do something with your life.” Taking his cloak from her, he slung it across his shoulders and began to go back to Grim and the spirit. “But know this,” he added. “Your life is in your own hands now. I won't kill you, but I won’t guarantee your survival if you stay on the same path you’ve been on for the past ten years.”

Alice watched the red-garbed undead leave, and gathered her belongings. She began to make her way south, and mulled over his words in her mind. “Maybe I should just go to Zanaris or something,” she muttered. “I’ve always wanted to see a fairy anyway.”

V watched as the young girl left the hill and began heading south. He wondered if he would ever see her again, or if she would end up as yet another victim to the same kind of people she had been running with for most of her life. She was out of sight when he felt the tingle of arcane magic vibrate in the air.

“Interesting,” the blue robed man said. “And here I thought you were ordered to mete out justice to all of the bullyblades, not let one go free.”

V turned to face the man, and fire seemed to burn in his eyes. “She’s just a kid,” he retorted. “She doesn’t seem like the kind that deserves death just because she violated a tenet of an order she doesn’t even belong to.”

“Kid or not, she still violated a principle of the universe,” the man replied. “She was involved with a murder, so she must face the reality of her crimes sooner or later.”

“Heh,” V said. “Tell me, do you think she’ll really be free after today?”

The man looked at V in confusion. “Come again?” he remarked.

“Think,” V said. “I’m not sure how involved she was with that man’s death, but she knows what she did. Whether or not she’s innocent doesn’t matter, because she’ll be the one who has to live with that knowledge for the rest of her life!”

The man smiled. “It looks like I was wrong, then. Justice was served after all.”

“Alright, now I don’t follow,” V said.

“Remember my words from that night so long ago,” the man replied. “Committing unsavory acts may very well be the better of the choices presented to you during your missions. By committing an act that was seen as 'good' in this world, you’ve only condemned that young woman to more suffering than she would have experienced if she were dead.”

“Then that’s for her to deal with,” V said.

“I never said it wasn’t.”

“So we gonna keep arguin’ all day or what?” Grim interrupted. “Nothin’ personal, Blue, but isn’t there a mission or somethin’ you wanted me to do?”

“Ah, yes,” the tattooed man said. “The mission. About that.” The man searched through his pockets, and drew out a cube with eyes etched into its sides. He worked his fingers along the cube’s edges, and the top slid off easily as he flicked its side. He stuck his hand inside, and produced a handful of scrolls from the recesses of the box.

“Time is running short, so let's make this quick shall we? These are treaties,” the man said. “Various organizations have agreed to help the order in times of duress, and now is one of those times.”

“All this for a Talisman?” V asked.

“It’s not just about the Talisman,” the man retorted. “Look into the sky and tell me what you see."

V looked up, and saw that the clear sky was now covered with storm clouds. Lightning danced in the sky, but other than that nothing seemed too out of place to his eyes.

“I’m not seeing anything unusual,” he said.

“That’s because you’re not aware of the signs,” the man replied. “But I assure you, things are moving at a pace which could prove to be catastrophic to this world should we fail to react accordingly.”

“Alright, so what’s going on?” V asked.

“The Coming of the Returning is at hand,” the man said. “The first wave is what is known among my people as ‘The Onslaught’…a time where a violent global change ensures the proper environment for the enemy to make their moves to restoring the Dark Powers to the planes.”

“And the Talisman is what will kick it off?” V asked.
