Aiden braced for impact, but strangely enough he felt nothing as he closed his eyes before he hit the ground. Or rather, he felt nothing but that damned vibrating, and now it was beginning to drive him insane. Just what was so damn important about that feeling that it dominated his thoughts like that?

He did*’t intend to wait long for an answer. He opened his eyes slightly, and found himself lying helpless on the ground, and from what he could tell, his body was shifting with the earth around Grim’s feet. It was a miracle that Grim hadn’t just stepped on him yet, though in the back of his mind he wondered if the creature had at least some degree of control of its body by now.

The Raven Knight hovered around his prone body, as if it was gloating at him one last time. He could see that it held the scroll in its hands, oblivious to the power emanating from the unholy artifact that was so cursed by the Chaos God’s power. It merely looked at him and nodded in what he guessed was mockery or a twisted form of respect before ascending higher into the sky with merely 2 beats from its black feathered wings, which sent a few lone feathers in the air slowly twirling down to the unnatural chaos below.

It was one such feather that landed on Aiden’s cheek. It was then that the godsdamned amulet finally stopped vibrating like a small dog on a dose of overload potions that the herbalists of Guthix were so fond of making. It was finally then that the blue fire around his body dissipated, and began to fan out in all directions from his body.

The force of the resulting explosion sent him hurtling into the air. He barely caught a glimpse of an explosion of red energy from somewhere on one of Grim’s elbows followed by a small object flying free of the area. He did*’t know what it was, but he tumbled through the air over the walls of Castle Falador. Over the White Knights and their dying comrades. Over the monsters feasting on corpses around both sides of the moat below.

It was then that he realized that the moat was actually getting closer. Typical adventurer’s luck, he decided as he embraced the icy cold wetness.

~^+^~

The ground shook. Or rather, something did. Maybe it was the water. Or maybe it was that damned medallion again. Aiden couldn’t tell anymore. All he knew was the he was surrounded by darkness and an empty coldness that spread to his entire body. And he seemed to have trouble breathing, though he forgot why.
Something gripped his shoulder. He felt no pain, but that meant nothing anymore. But whatever it was, it was dragging him into the light, and he felt something run down his face as he found himself able to breathe once more.

“EY! Get off da shiny!” he heard a raspy voice croak loudly. He felt whatever held him release his shoulder, and his vision turned just enough to the right to allow him a look at a Basilisk. Something wrinkled and green-a goblin, he guessed, though it could have easily been an ogre or something else for all he knew- was pointing a crude spear at the bulky reptile, which hissed in return.

Aiden turned his head to the left, and saw a goblin staring him in the face. “It alive!” the goblin cried. “Shiny alive!”

Cries of “Kill da shiny ting” filled his ears, followed by protests of “No, kill da rock”. He wasn’t sure what they were referring to, but the goblin facing him turned its gaze toward something else, and sheer terror filled its ugly eyes. The terror was soon replaced by sheer determination of suicidal degrees, and the goblin pointed at whatever it saw while chattering in its strange tounge real fast.

The others followed suit, and brandished their spears in preparation to charge. Their zeal was cut short by a boulder falling from the sky on one goblin, leaving nothing but a crumpled, bloody corpse in its wake. Aiden looked around and saw the other goblins’ eyes widen in terror once more.

“Run for yer live!” was all they could say as they beat a hasty retreat to the sound of rapidly approaching ‘thumps’.

Aiden did*’t get to see what happened next as darkness put him at ease once more.

~^+^~

Sheer ringing filtered through the darkness next. It seemed distant at first, but grew louder and louder as the sound of swords meeting each other in fierce combat came into focus. Cries of “For Falador!” soon followed, and among them were curses in a strange tounge that made no sense to human ears.

Aiden felt himself leave the ground, and he opened his eyes to see a blurred, dark form surrounded by pure blackness holding him up with a firm grip on his neck. The figure’s alabaster face showed signs of wear and tear as he regained focus, and for a second he thought a random zombie might have decided he was a nice meal. But then he saw pointed fangs that would give even the biggest Fremennik wolves pause, and immediately knew what the Raven Knight’s intentions were.

The knight’* next move was cut short by a crossbow bolt slamming into its back. Black feathers fell from its broken wings and twirled off into the distance as the knight let Aiden go and collapsed to the ground in a screaming rage, disintegrating as it tried in vain to work the bolt out of its body.

The Raven Knight fell still once its skin stopped melting and hardened into a wooden like appearance. Aiden could still see a semblance of genuine terror in the knight’s darkening eyes as he fell to the ground beside it once more, and judging from the way he thought he saw a faint flickering spark moving through its eyes, it seemed as if the vampyre was still conscious in its ‘dead’ state.

A white plated boot obscured his view of the creature’s face, and Aiden groaned involuntarily as he managed to turn himself around to face upwards to see a relieved face of a White Knight. The knight looked like he was still a youth who had barely seen real combat in the service of his city, and his cracking voice all but confirmed it.

“S…survivor over here!” the knight called out to his comrades, who quickly finished their various opponents off and came rushing to his aid. A pair of knights managed to lift Aiden to his feet, but he quickly crumpled to the ground as soon as they tried to let him walk. Aiden turned to look at his legs, and saw a hint of bone poking out from underneath his armor, which was beginning to split apart from the waist down.

“Ah crap,” he muttured. The knights saw what he did, and called for a healer. The response was fast, for no sooner had they finished their call had an elderly woman in white robes and a matching hood hurried to tend to Aiden.

The healer took a look at his legs, poking at bone and plate here and there as she worked her way down his body, which he wasn’t all that surprised to feel was damaged a lot more than he originally thought. He heard something about dislocated spines and broken ribs, but he brushed that to the side as soon as the healer began her ministrations, which included a lot of pain on Aiden’s end from her somehow shifting his broken legs back into a reasonable position.

He barely held in a scream through clenched teeth. He kept telling himself that this probably wasn’t the worst injury he’s ever had (he still remembered an adventure that ended with him and Caden chasing down a dragon in the wilderness while riding a war boar that was on fire), but that wasn’t helping when the waves of pain hit him hard and fast again and again as the woman contined to slide bones and armor apart and back to their proper places. Or at least, that’s what he hoped she was doing. He couldn’t really tell now that his vision was beginning to grow fuzzy, and the pain almost causing him to black out at the most inopportune of times.

It was during one of those near blackouts that he barely heard the healer call for runes. He saw a frail man dressed in rags that barely stayed on his skeletal frame rush to the woman’s side and produce a small sack cloth that he was rummaging through. He produced a handful of dull gray stones with various symbols engraved on them, though Aiden couldn’t see which ones they were since the healer snatched them from the man before he could get a good look.

Aiden saw the healer move to his left, then his right as she started placing the runestones on the ground near him. He was by no means even remotely magically gifted, so he figured it would be best if he just rode the strange ritual out and hope that the healer knew what she was doing as she produced a ceremonial dagger emblazoned with Saradomin’s Holy Star and began to chant in a foreign tounge. He saw her make some strange and indecipherable signs in the air with a flurry of slashes and cuts as she circled around him like a bird of prey, and he felt the amulet begin to vibrate once more.

‘This again?’ Aiden managed to whisper to himself as the woman rambled on. Her voice was steadily growing louder and faster by the moment, and her movements sped up to match her frenzied speech. Just when he thought she would never stop, the healer suddenly did, and stopped right near his head. She looked Aiden in the eyes as she suddenly brought the dagger to bear, and tore a dire wound across her free wrist. However, no blood spilled forth. Instead, a soothing white energy leapt from where the wound would’ve been, and landed right in the middle of Aiden’s chest.

The adventurer felt himself begin to rise from the ground, but not of his own will. He strained to break free from whatever invisible grasp held him captive, but it did little to help him actually move. Once again the strange comforting warmth of the Saradominist artifact*s power washed over him, and Aiden’s vision turned a dark blue as blue flames spread from his chest outwards to cover his whole body.

Hearing was the next sense to be restored by the strange and godly magic coursing over him. Many of the knights- who must have numbered at least thirty by his own estimate- looked shocked at Aiden’s sudden display of power, but a good majority of them managed to overcome their awe and ready their weapons in case he made any sudden movements.

A brave soul approached Aiden as he finally regained full control of his body. The knight steadied Aiden as his body twisted so his feet were firmly planted on the ground, which he was more than thankful for considering the days’ events so far.

‘That blue fire…is it a blessing of Saradomin?’ the knight whispered to Aiden.

‘I wish I knew,’ he replied.

The healer put a hand on Aiden’s shoulder and he turned to face the wrinkled old woman. In retrospect, it was amazing that she had survived whatever ritual had ‘healed’ him now that he had seen her true age, but yet he also saw something else in her. Her body was glowing with a subtle light blue aura in Aiden’s eyes, whereas the rest of the knights appeared normal in his gaze.

‘I know that power is not yours,’ the healer said with a raspy voice.

‘I never…look,’ Aiden said. ‘Thanks for helping me. I think. But I seriously don’t know what the hell this stuff is. All I know is it happened once before when I tried touching some scroll that was buried in that Draug or Grim thing or whatever it was. And it happened again when your magic did whatever it did to me.’

The healer looked at him suspiciously, and nodded to the knights behind Aiden. They had moved closer and were almost upon him when he turned around. When he looked back to the woman, he found that his gaze was going back to normal.
The healer also somehow managed to produce the same strange artifact that he had hidden beneath his armor.

‘By the gods,’ he heard a knight say. *That man stole one of the Sacred Treasures!*
*What…no, I found it in a box!” Aiden yelled. He tried to grab the amulet from the woman, but she was surprisingly quick for her age and managed to evade his lunge with no effort at all. ‘Seriously, this guy called Hound asked me and a friend to look after it. It was doing something with that Draug in your own castle’s courtyard, I swear!’

Aiden felt something hit him in the back of the head, but he managed to shrug off the pain for a moment and barrel through the knights around him while he got his bearings. The group was unprepared for such a move, and barely had time to move out of the way before some of them got thrown to the ground.

Aiden barely got more than two steps away from the group before he realized where he was. Even though the sun was beginning to set and the pristine paths of the city were tarnished with blood and grime from the fighting, Aiden had a hard time believing that Falador had any feasible way of recovering from the invasion. He saw a few houses that were caving in, and the bodies of slaughtered civilians piled up near the streets against the corpses of scrawny goblins clutching spears even in death. Smoke bellowed into the air in the distance, and a few inhuman cries were cut short to the tune of various calls of victory and praise to Saradomin.

Aiden started to run once he heard the knights give the order to bring him down. He did*’t know which way he was going until he saw the wrought-iron gates of the city park before him. He made a right at the path’s branching point, and kept on running until he saw the bank. The calls of the knights weren’t far behind, and so he ducked into an alleyway behind Falador’s western bank and held his breath as the stench of decay filled his nose.

He hard a shrill scream from further into the alley. ‘Please, I have nothing!’ he heard an accented voice cry. Incoherent chittering followed, and Aiden recognized it as whatever passed for the goblin language. The adventurer did*’t even think as he barreled down the alleyway towards the source of the sound.

Another scream told him he was likely too late. He knew the sound of pain thanks to his own fights, and whoever owned the voice just received a nasty wound, or worse. That did*’t keep him from running, and it was only seconds before he came around a corner to see a dark haired woman who appeared to be from the desert backed up against a wall, her eyes filled with terror and hysteria.

‘Azura?’ he asked quietly. For some reason the alley seemed dark, so he couldn’t make out too much detail. But he saw enough to fear that his friend might have been hurt. Rational thought left Aiden as he rushed to the woman’s side and inspected her surprisingly lifeless body.

Whoever it was, she definitely wasn’t Azura. For one, the woman seemed to simply look older than his friend. Another tip was that the woman had many piercings on her left eyebrow, some which were glowing with what he supposed was arcane power, whereas Azura had none in recent years.

Aiden noticed that her clothes were ripped across the stomach. Inspecting the wound further revealed that whatever killed her was hot enough to cauterize the wound, but not hot enough (or mudane enough?) to leave any semblance of heat on the disfiguration. But it did*’t stop the wound from swelling to at least twice its size, which Aiden saw as odd for one he thought was only delivered mere seconds before his arrival.

‘Oh man, this is bad,’ Aiden said. He began to back away from the body and go back the way he came from. He hoped the knights had passed by already, though without a weapon he wasn’t sure if he stood a better chance with whatever murdered the woman either.

The entrance to the alley was in sight! He did*’t hear the cries of the knights, nor did he hear any sign of pursuit from behind. He wondered if he would ever find out what killed that poor woman, but he figured that could wait. His first priority was freedom from the doomed City of White, and that same freedom was cut short as a White Knight appeared from around the corner and blocked the way out of the alley right as he reached the entrance.

Aiden did*’t react fast enough as the knight punched him in the gut. He heard the sound of muffled boots approach him as his assailant dragged him to the street and forced him onto his stomach. His arms were forced behind his back, and he felt a searing pain around his wrists followed by the cool unwelcome embrace of chains and shackles. He also began feeling real tired, yet his body seemed to move of its own accord anyway.

‘I’m not in the mood for pleasantries today,’ the White Knight said as Aiden’s senses began to dull. ‘Just be glad you’re only under arrest for stealing our Sacred Treasure. We’ve killed people for less, after all.’

~^+^~

~Now*

When Aiden finished his tale, he waited for Caden to finish his original side of the story. But when he looked over at his swordbrother, he found that Caden was merely regarding him with a shocked expression.

“I’m sorry I interrupted you like that,” he told Caden. “It’s just…all of that was in the back of my mind since it happened. I couldn’t keep it held in any longer.”

Caden grinned. “I’m glad you did though,” he said. “Because after I crawled onto that Draug’s fingers, one thing led to another and I ended up falling off of it.”

Azura gasped. “That’s horrible! How’d you get out of it?”

“Would you believe me if I told you I fell on top of a Raven Knight on my way down and caused him to crash into the moat after we beat each other up in midflight?” Caden replied.

“Actually, I can,” Azura said.

Caden frowned. “Well, I really did*’t in any case. Sort of. I actually fell on top of a Raven Knight on my down, but the thing decided to grab onto me and throw me into the ramparts instead. From there, I ended up getting tangled up with some more Raven Knights and some Cockatrices. I ended up diving into the moat from the ramparts when a Cockatrice tried using its death glare on me.”
