So I decided around 1-2 months ago to make a summoning pure, and it's been pretty fun. I've noted that you can't really do combat with familiars unless you tank, so I permitted myself to raise summoning, defense, and hp.

My future goal is to gain access to miscellania, but on the way there, I'm stuck on Dragon Slayer. I just got to the dragon, and she hits HARD.
My current combat stats are:
51 def
36 hp
38 summoning

I'm actually severely hindered by not being able to use a real shield. I think I may need to get defense up to 60 and summoning high enough for iron titan, at least. What do you guys think? Right now I'm only able to ding her for 1/4 damage before I run out of food.

You misunderstand (I wasn't clear, sorry), The armor bonus of my shield is a major part of my dps. If I have to use the antifire shield, I do less damage as a result. I don't think it'll be too bad once I get better familiars, though.

The problem with summoning is that your familiars won't attack anything that isn't actively attacking you. As soon as you break line of sight, your familiar stops attacking. It's sort of the only way they can keep people from cheesing every fight, I get it, but it makes it tough.

As for just safe-spotting and using level 1 mage or ranged attacks? not sure if that's possible. I think she can attack at a distance now, like other dragons. I haven't tested it, though.

I don't think I can get an instant kill dart on an ironman account. And I'm not sure how the reworked poison works. I could bring a scorpion in with me for its scrolls. I'm not sure if there's a safe place to hide from her, though.

Interested to know how the progress is going, I've recently started up my own summoning pure however I'm struggling in the leveling def department atm.

Can I ask what familars are safe to use and don't give you combat exp other than defence. Also what have you been training on to get that high.
I'm only 29 Def | 20 HP | 1 Summoning atm, was thinking about the defence/summoning on the back burner until I get 90 smithing for armour spikes but this won't really be helpful until I can survive and tank long enough.

If you're still going with it I'd love for you to get in touch.

Would be nice to have some tips!

Hey Mgcl trevor!

It's definitely possible for you to kill Elvarg.
I did it on my defence pure with just 60 defence.
I could not deal any direct damage, because I'm 10hp. I also don't use familiars to DPS.

I managed to kill Elvarg with the reflect ability + blood necklace + recoil rings.

In addition to that, you can deal damage with your familiar, armour spikes and abilities.
To increase your dps, you could use power gear. For this situation, I'd recommend for you: full elite black (unless you can wear rock-shell, fremennik trials), anti-dragon shield and a bone club (unless you already have darklight).

Ooo ty for the suggestions, i'll look into it. I think you have missed the part where we mentioned doing this on a Hardcore Ironman. Sadly dxpw does nothing for us and we also can't buy elite black armour. It's quest locked and we definitely can't access it. We can however very slowly do deathmatch potentially. But getting 65 defence is definitely gonna be a trek.
