"Players can unlock the ability to craft certain artisan items outside of an artisan task by using artisan points"
This was my main qualm originally: as long as skillers are capable of actually making money out of this skill, it will be used. Otherwise, it will die.
Assuming that the "items" are the ones that people actually want to be able to make for cash/general skilling (runes, crossbows, tools, and for the sake of firemaking's survival alone - slow burning coal), I will now be willing to change my no vote to a yes vote.
Before, there was just no reason to train the skill, as the chances that you'd actually be able to get a profitable task was minimal to zero. This obviously made it unbalanced in comparison with slayer, where you can kill whatever you want for cash alone, assuming you have the levels; giving skillers a distinct disadvantage. Spending artisan points to gain the ability to make these profitable items any time you like, seems like a very fair compromise. Just please price them fairly - don't rush to make the prices low enough to access things at all easily. I'd expect to spend about 30-50 hours accumulating points, just to be able to purchase the ability to permanently make something good.
90% in favour of artisan now though. Shall be voting yes.
