This content does not belong in Old School RuneScape. I do not often post in the forums or in the subreddit, but this potential update has brought me out to speak my mind.
These sorts of updates are counter and opposite to to the look and feel of Old School. It feels as the game developers are making a sudden trajectory towards transforming OSRS into RS3. Shooting Stars exist in RS3 and may be played for enjoyment there. There is no need to copy RS3 into OSRS. OSRS is a different game appreciated for different reasons.
I know that if this update passed and I simply happened upon a Shooting Star, I would not want to stop what I was doing, return to a bank, bank my items, spend time mining a Star, bank those items, take out my items for what I had been doing earlier, and continue as I was. I am sure that many other players will share the same sentiment.
Unfortunately, this update would provide a new meta to the Mining skill. The proposed ring would be too good to not obtain. To be on track for high efficiency in Mining, one would likely choose to participate in Shooting Stars to obtain its rewards.
To keep up, one would have to keep a close eye on the clock for the predicted time that Shooting Stars would come out. There would be clan chats/discords with many scouts and bots dedicated to locating these Stars and many players would not have a chance to be the first to mine it. These sorts of mechanics are antithetical to the charm of Old School. I like that I can play at any time and quit at any time without FOMO. Introducing fear of missing out to Old School is unhelpful and toxic.
I hope for the longevity of Old School that this update and others like it will never pass the polls. I will be voting No and I hope many more vote this way as well. The Old School Dev Team has the potential to work on botting and revamp existing content, which I can imagine would be much appreciated universally.
