As in Kiere*'s example, the intention is that no matter what resource you gather, your chance is roughly the same (IE: Mining Iron and runite should approx give the same chance in the long run. Some people got the impression from John's tweet that MLM was intentionally made a worse option to get the pet.
If it's more common than coal however, it sounds like MLM got the same balancing as other training, which is great for those of us that doesn't like AHK/mouse key training
