My first impression was “Jagex trolls more than the players”.

Unfortunately, I don't think they are trolling this time. Sailing, in my opinion, would make a terrible skill. We already have Construction for a gold dump and I have the feeling that Sailing game play would feel similar to Temple Trekking (look it up, it is a real thing. Just very unpopular). I would say it would make a good Mini Game but lets be honest even that would be dead content in a few months. Just because Jagex offers shiny rewards that players want doesn't change the fact that this is a terrible skill idea. Vote “no” to Sailing. We can get these rewards in other ways.

Also, forcing PvP in a *skill” is just wrong. In my 10+ years of having a Runescape account I have NEVER once took part in PvP. I would like to keep it that way.

1) The reasons Temple Trekking is wildly unpopular are that the rewards are trash and escort missions are widely considered to be some of the least engaging video game mechanics.

2) Nowhere in the dev blog does it say PvP is forced, and I have to wonder if you're just looking for reasons to dislike Sailing. It specifically says that *past* the PvM/skilling content lies more dangerous waters with PvP; it's not going to be everywhere, and I'm 100% sure we'll be polled on the impact PvP has on this skill.

This isn't about simply gaining rewards. That's the mindset that too many players have nowadays. This is about adding new and original content to the game.

I'm also pretty sure they wont be forcing people to participate in PvP in the skill. If you take the time to read the developer's blog it says you can train the skill without fighting

I don't see why it's getting so much hate. Sounds better than Summoning and much better than Dungeoneering, which I think is a total waste of time. New lands, monsters, resources, etc. and floating PoHs sounds a lot nicer.

But it's just construction with some random mini-game style wave changes to deal with while sailing.

Why not just make it a new wing of the construction skill. This is just a gold sink. They could make those new islands available with NPC boats like all other major locations are, and make a new skill that can be trained on those islands.

Sailing wont be fun. It'll also likely end up being one of those skills, like construction, that everyone gets to some 70-80 milestone and then never touches again unless maxing.

Copying my previous post

I've yet to see a good, non-opinion based argument as to why Sailing (skill or minigame) should not pass.

People want Dungeoneering, and this gives you access to new resources and other rewards like DG did, yet this is inferior for some reason?

Summoning wasn't spectacular either. A tedious way to train, camping waterfiends on end for an item used to make a pouch, the only real way to train the skill. You literally did not even have to summon anything to train summoning.

Also, Jagex themselves said this would not cost any extra dev time. This project has been secretly in the works for months (given on Twitter)
"We plan to release sailing early next year. The release of sailing will not change anything in our current release schedule that we discussed earlier this year.

To name a couple of the largest projects we have planned, deadman mode is still heading your way in October and Zeah is still planned for June next year. Sailing may even act as the perfect stepping stone for you to venture to the land to the west.

To help achieve all of this, we will soon be starting the search for two developers to join us on the Old School team."

I'll be voting yes and I encourage the nay-sayers to wait for the next dev blog on it.

My fear would be that in order to get the desired rewards from Sailing players would have to enter "dangerous seas". Similar to how Black chinchompas are placed in the Wilderness to bring skillers into PvP territory.
