I'm not naive enough to believe that people don't, haven't, and aren't, doing this Ashes. The difference is officially supporting it.
That's the plus side as you point out. Those that are going to do it, can do it on the up and up, and profit Jagex as a result. (The cash sink, while good for the in-game economy, is rather marginal in real effect.)
I have no problem with Jagex, the company, trying to make a profit. My problem has always been with the playerbase, ever since my nooby self realized what those bald green guys chopping yews or mining coal meant for the game back in '06.
The players
forced Jagex to abandon the ideals they had written down then. I am not going to change my mind and condone the behaviour of those who did this to the game, either then, or those still doing it now.
