I'm going to say no, and I'm going to tell you why. OldSchool RuneScape is medieval. I started missing more medieval elements the more modern equivalents that were developed. Abyssal whip? Goodbye, scimitar (special attacks excused). Partyhats? Goodbye, hoods. Those are blunt examples, but what I always deemed most important was the earthy and medieval FEEL of the game, as well as the initial fervour for the background music. What I ALSO liked, was the OPTIONAL commitment we had toward the economy and in effect, SOMEWHAT, to each other. Capitalism is ruled by a central government for the public interest (in theory - no, I won't start on capitalism) and safety. RuneScape had none of that in the beginning. It was, as some might say, 'a dirty free-for-all'. That is what I like about this game. However, we all know that is not true for real human beings, as opposed to pixellated characters and avatars. We all ENJOY the pvp components, safe(for items) and non-safe, because supposedly, underneath our soft and gooey exteriors, we all quite LIKE the notion that we are all smarter, faster or stronger than one another in some way, and are able to prove it through competitive gameplay. Such is the ego. Such is specialisation.
What a game like RuneScape without a centralized trading hub like the GE does for its players and the broader community is offer an intangible reminder that we do not NEED financial commerce. We do not NEED to possess coins and trade constantly with them in order to make a living(an ingame experience worth having), ESPECIALLY since there are 'non-player' characters willing to buy our junk, offer us items for small(*chuckle*) favours and items littering the floor for us to find and make do with. This game is not reality, but it IS a part of each and every one of ours. Let us keep some of our freedom to market and the element of mystery that comes from not knowing exactly what are fellows are doing, because let's be real here - SEE NEXT POST 4 CONCLUSION!
