I think everyone should look at the facts.
Players
Based on average players at all times per day RS3 has gone from averaging 45,000 players in 2013 to 25,000 players for the last couple of months. This has dropped by 4,500 players this year alone.
OSRS has gone from an average of 12,000 players in 2013 to a consistent 44,000 players this year. Since January there have been 44,000+ on average.
Now look at revenue.
In 2015;
Subscription; 37.6m
MTX rev; 19.6m
Ad; 470k
other; 101k
Profit; 20.4m (before tax)
In 2016;
Subscription; 46.8m
MTX; 27m
Ads; 375k
other; 142k
Profit; 28.8 (after tax)
Conclusion
Jagex cant afford to remove MTX completely, however maybe they should look at the update structure for old school in a bid to retain RS3 players and even start growing the player base again. If the current downturn continues and the game loses on average 5000 players a year RS3 has an expected life expectancy of 5 years. Although it would probably fail in two due to the lack of MTX transactions. Lets hope they make the game more beginner friendly and less pay to win.
