I am also disappointed in this happening after players used their keys to try and obtain event items. Now it will be automatic for such a small amount of money. I'm not sure if there is anything to do but definitely discouraging to play their events.

Cole,
first problem with your response "Anyone who has played RS for an extended period of time". You start off excluding a lot of people, neither is this a valid excuse.

second problem "knows", now you are assuming and neither this is a valid excuse.

third problem "change rates", as mentioned above already, changing rates and making something very very rare GUARANTEED are literally separate things, that is not the same.

fourth problem is another assumption. If they would be monitoring the entire event, they would have just said so, not just specifically mention the black party hat alone. another assumption, this is not a valid excuse again.

fifth problem is intentions. Intentions are irrelevant and should not matter at all in this topic, not to mention it is impossible to confirm and verify. again another assumption.

sixth problem. santa's have been in the game for 3.5 weeks now, yet the TH event, which this is all about, was only active for 2 days prior to the change. this TH promo is the first and only promo that has the santa in it as a possible reward, for which a lot of players save up keys and buy them for.

If there were indeed not enough santa's in the game, they would have changed the drop rates from presents earlier. Yet they did it 2 days after this current promo, on which everyone that saved keys, already spent them.
I don't get what you mean with everyone hopefully being closer to that 400 mark than we think.. It doesn't count keys spent prior to the update, which is the exact problem and reason of this thread...
Yeah they do this stuff and likely will do similar stuff in the future, but again, this is not a valid excuse to let it slip and ignore cuz that'll give them the green light and it'll only get worse from that point onward.

I'm not in any way trying to defend Jagex for what they have done here. I agree that it is underhanded and similar actions in the future should be avoided. I am on your side.

I have merely come here to state what I have learned from over 20 years of playing this game.

Everything I have stated is true (unless specified as speculation). Jagex do monitor rates of items coming into the game, Jagex did mention they would monitor part of this event (thus meaning they are monitoring this event), and Jagex do change rates seemingly on a whim.

Furthermore, Jagex's intentions for Treasure Hunter is to make money. If they see a way of getting people to spend more money on it, they will do it. Yes, this is underhanded, but not unexpected.

The Purple Santa Hat has been obtainable on Treasure Hunter since December 11th as a potential prize from Santa's Presents. My point of it being obtainable in-game before this still stands as they will only want so many of these items released. They can use the Treasure Hunter mechanics to fine tune this, and this looks to be the case.

Unfortunately they haven't counted the progress to 400 keys like I had hoped. However, it is how I expected it to be.

Jagex have the power to do whatever they want to do. If people continue to spend real life money on things like this, they will continue to push the boundaries of how much they will offer. Like I said before, if you do want to pay extra, try holding out till later in the event. There is plenty of time for things to change again.

Alternatively, continue to pay more early on, and be among those first to obtain the item(s). However, don't complain when things change later. RS is forever changing, don't expect it to stand still.

I feel like this might genuinely warrant legal action. It's misleading at best and an outright lie at worst. It's predatory monetization and players shouldn't be punished for spending their keys earlier into the promotion, especially during the holiday season where people have lives to spend with their families outside the game and are less likely to be active later into it. This is extremely exploitative and a big part of why I hate the introduction of new rares. Stuff like this really ruins the holiday event for me. I also dislike that they're trying to present this as just fun holiday bonus instead of a predatory monetization tactic.

You want to make the guaranteed rare only achievable by buying keys? Fine but don't cheat the players buying those keys by misleading them about the promotion. A game that does stuff like this doesn't deserve to have players pay them for this kind of poor and predatory treatment. It's also bad in the long run because players that may have been willing to buy keys up to this point will have their trust worn down from incidents like this. Why should they reward the company by buying any more keys?

I bought 2 separate treasure key promos before they did this one thinking it would up my chances. Kinda wish I had bought the promos for this current TH promo just based on all the other items added as well. I bought the 3rd key promo so I could get myself a Santa. I've been wanting one since i first started playing.

Do what you can about this promo but I think it'd also help to boycott key MTX. If you're really set on paying for the rare, check if the money you'd spend buying bonds to buy the hat off another player is cheaper. Boycotting the rares altogether probably won't work because of how many people are fixated on them but refusing to buy them reduces demand. If enough players stop wanting rares for their own sake, they stop having the value Jagex exploits for FOMO.

We should also start tracking the FOMO stuff and TH promo exploitation. Remind players of this every November and December from now on. No one should buy the holiday key promos after this. There's no reason to trust they won't pull stuff like this again unless it hurts their profits in the long run.

The people who bought keys are definitely the most wronged but as a premium member, I feel cheated too. It's not what I get it for, but part of the premium perks benefit use of TH without additional purchases. Premium membership and the extra keys you get from it are being devalued too. Even regular membership is getting devalued with the keys they get that F2P doesn't. The whole point is that players already paying for membership deals don't need to pay more money to get these things. Basically everyone who paid Jagex money, even if only for membership, is getting scammed out of value for what they paid for.

All I will say is that as far as premier goes - for players such as myself, I purchase it on two accounts solely for the yearly "heavier" discount. The extra perks that come with it, to me, are an added bonus.

& Furthermore-aside, I've been admittedly lucky myself yet I still feel absolutely terrible for many within my community whom continue to appear rather awfully unlucky. The RNG factor and FOMO correlated into it definitely becomes a touchy subject when brought into MTX.

But at the end of the day, whether or not we contribute further financially towards the game; all MTX purchased by everyone essentially benefits us all as it prolongs the game's lifespan - assuming funds are correctly appropriated to support that theory :P . What others do with their funds is on them, really.

I definitely feel that an announcement should have been made prior to the original posting of this community event, however. Not even to necessarily prepare the client's credit cards but rather to offer a higher level of PR and gratuity to those that had purchased packages prior to the imps taking over. How they would've properly worded that, I don't know.
