The memories came, like a tsunami they flooded his brain. The apple stall scene returned to his eyes as he felt his back pushed to the ground, and rope sliding over his claws, quickly pulled tight as he was forced to stumble further into his captors clutches…

The trial had started quickly, he remembered, and much of the tribe had come to see his condemnation…

“Kol’no, the so-called ‘shadow of Abbinah,’ you are brought here today to face the sentence for your crimes. You are accused of 573 counts of thievery, 12 counts of extortion, and have been found in possession of a multitude of stolen goods. How will you plead?”

Taka’ra’s eyes shifted to him in a look of utter discontempt as he finished reading the charges.

Gee, why’s he so grumpy today? Didn't he catch a master thief a while ago?

“What options have I got?”

“You may plead either innocent- in which case you will most certainly be found guilty of perjury and your punishment will only be lengthened, or you can plead guilty, and pray that your jury somehow sympathizes with your terrible crimes against our tribe.”

“Guilty then, rather straightforward choice, and there’s no need to be so dramatic Tak-"

"Silence in the courtroom, please, the defendant will talk only when asked questions, understood?”

Kol’no's eyes darted to the source of the remark, and found Armadyl himself before him- perched up above overlooking the trial.

”Understood?”
Armadyl bellowed once again.

“Yes…” Kol’no croaked as for the first time in his life he had a hard time finding his voice.

His eyes moved across the roam, surveying each guard that stood. 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 12, 18, 25, 37 - he stopped counting. Silently, he took his chair behind him and took a seat to observe his trial. He brought his claws to his face, and then found the chains wrapped around his wrist.

Did they think I was going to go anywhere?

He chuckled to himself.

He leaned back in his chair, placing his feet upon the table, as he observed Aviansie come forward to give their accounts of his ‘most heinous crimes’. Stories of his reputation as ‘the Shadow of Abbinah’ surfaced again and again. Families gone thirsty, their precious water whisked away by the shadow. A pang of guilt went over him as he glanced at the families he’d hurt. He quickly looked away. He was thirsty too, after all, it wasn’t his fault that they were all in need, but here he was, on trial. He glanced upwards once more at Armadyl.

Finally, it was time for him to take the stand.

“So, tell me, Kol’no, why do you steal from your victims?”

Kol’no looked up into Taka’ra’s eyes, studying them carefully. Then a smile crept across his face.

“Rather silly question, don’t you think, Taka’ra? You’re smart after all, you probably already know the answer, so why waste my time getting another?”

Taka’ra’s expression froze. “Answer the question.” He demanded.

“Very well, if you insist…” Kol’no's attention shifted from his prosecutor, to the jury, the ones that he actually needed to dupe- no- convince…

“As you all know, the time after the god wars was hard for us all. My family died, thirsty, giving their last dying breaths to give me the sustenance I needed… But after they died ... I was alone, and once again, thirsty…. I needed water, and those crimes were how I found a way to get some. I was struggling to survive, just like my victims. We’re all in the same spot here, guys. I know I haven’t been good, but please, I never meant anyone any harm- I was just too busy thinking on how to keep myself away from it… What is that old saying? Gotta steal to drink, gotta drink to live? Well, that was my situation for you."

“Please,” Taka’ra uttered as his eyes rolled before he went to Kol’no again.

“You’re a young Aviansie, and a master thief, agile, and able.”

“Ooo, you’re too kind to me, Taka’ra” Kol’no said, as he feigned swooning.

“You could have helped. You could have helped everyone, including yourself, get the water we all needed! But instead you-”

“What? Broke away from the tribe? I got tired of waiting for the savior that never came. My parents died waiting, and I wasn’t going to join them. I’m not a people person, I’ll admit it, but I was not going to let him destroy my life again . You wanna put someone on trial, do so with h-”

“Silence! I am not the one on trial here, Kol’no, you are. I suggest you learn to take the blame for your own actions, rather than just shift them onto me.”

Kol’no opened his beak for a clever retort, but found himself unable to find the words to use. He stammered silently, gawking at the god above him.

You, You silenced me?!

Armadyl looked up from Kol’no, shifting his gaze to Taka’ra, as he began his closing statement.

What? How could you! My parents died in front of me, for you, and this is my thanks?
You risked the lives of all those around you to save yourself.

I never meant to hurt anyone!
But you did. You could have helped, but you ran away.

Wait a minute-

Kol’no glared at Armadyl once more

You’re in my head?!
What the heck!?!
First you squish my freedom to speak, now you intrude on the privacy of my thoughts? Come on!

“Kol’no will suffer ten years, solitary confinement.”
The words hit him like an arrow, waking him from his silent fury with Armadyl. The guards came to him, grabbing his wrists and lifting him out the chair. Kol’no did all he could to twist around, to continue his stare of hatred at the god. Armadyl looked away.

Kol’no shuffled in his small cell, tightening his wings to fit inside, turning to look out the one window left to him…

A knock on the door.

“Kol’no, Armadyl seeks your audience.”

Kol’no grinned.

“Why not, it will get me out of this little cell for a while at least…”

“I have a deal for you.”

Kol’no stared, hatefully, into the gods eyes, waiting. Armadyl got up and looked out the window at the rest of the kingdom. Kol’no knew there wasn’t much to see.

" Your ancestors were once great warriors in the god wars. They fought valiantly to protect our people, to get passage to that great world. Hmm. They didn't want to leave you know…”

“They wanted to wait for you to return.”

Armadyl glanced down at the floor.

“I want you to follow that path- Gielinor is open to us once more, and I want you to fight to keep it that way.”

“Why?”

Armadyl darted around to look Kol’no in the eyes.

"Why? To keep your race alive, to ensure the growth of the following generations, to escape from the constant fear provided by your homeland. That’s why."

This time, it was Kol’no's turn to look away.

“If your real question is what you have to gain, that’s a different matter…if you agree, I will commute your sentence, and once the war is over- You will be free.”

“And if the war doesn’t end?”

Armadyl glanced away.

“Then we’ll all be free…in death...”

“Oi! Kara-Meir, I found that demon that guy was telling us about!” bellowed a dwarf from below.

Kol’no jerked awake, coughing, spilling his meal all over himself. Wonderful.

“You idiot, that’s not a demon, that’s one of Armadyl’s bird men. What’s he doing away from the convoys?”

Company… he thought with an eye roll.

Bandos would be an awesome dad.

"What's that, you told the other kids that your dad could beat up their dad? Of course I can! "

"You got into a fight with some of the other kids? They better be dead, or you're grounded."

"Your boyfiend/girlfriend can't even kill a greater demon with his/her bare hands? Obviously I won't let you two date each other."
