I think someone at Jagex decided that the signature heroes were a bad idea, and has been trying furiously to kill them off ever since (didn't one mod say he'd wanted to off Xenia for a long time?).

Alternatively, Jagex is addicted to killing off characters they feel the player may be attached to for cheap emotional gut punches. Also, most of the deaths are unsatisfactory or dumb.

Either way, I'm predicting Ozan will die or otherwise get screwed when he reenters the desert questline.

The Signature Heroes should never have had quests associated with them. IIRC this was right around the time voice acting was put in every new quest, and they wanted them to be characters that would be totally voice acted. We know how that turned out. (And seriously, can you think of any other game where some of the dialogue is voice acted, but not all??)

I think Hazeel's solution would be the best here. :P Except for the Raptor, of course. He is already dead. Brutal Green Dragons got the best of him. Not impressed.
To those cursed by war and pest, Come into the light of Armadyl and rest. This is the law of Armadyl.

Well received games with partial voice acting: Persona 3, Persona 4, Morrowind, Final Fantasy 14. I will agree that I've never liked voice acting in Runescape though.

I think that the signature heroes are just fine as quest characters. At the time I really didn't like them, seeing it as a retcon to the journey I already had, but I came round to them. Having different player archetypes portrayed as their own characters isn't a bad idea, esp. since no other player characters can be canon to the player's quest (beyond "random Black-Arm/Phoenix Gang member who helped me). They certainly don't deserve to be offed like an extra for "In This Episode, SOMEBODY DIES!" plot exploitation.

The issue is, for that to work well, they needed to grow alongside the Adventurer prior to having major events occur to them. Ariane w/ Rune Mysteries and Ozan w/ Diamond work fine in that regard. Owen does not, and this pardigm is especially hurt by the 6th age dropping new players into the middle of the story. A new player can easily meet Sir Owen for the first time in a quest where he dies! Several other signature heroes die or are otherwise terribly harmed in 6th age quests that are only the 1st and 2nd time a player could have met them. Doing so also removes them from their patrols around the world, meaning new players won't even have those interactions!

I have to agree. If RuneScape's 5th Age and 6th Age were separate maps that one could travel freely between like Ocarina of Time's two time periods, we wouldn't have this problem. The Signature Heroes would still be showing up around the world in the 5th Age, and you wouldn't miss seeing what Sir Owen had to say about most of the quests just because 'Death of Chivalry' was one of the first quests you did (and in it, he died and 'came back wrong' meaning he's not around anymore). The Signature Heroes meetings would still have all the heroes in them in the 5th Age, with Xenia's discussion about the history of the guilds and all.

As it is, though, a lot of dialogue becomes a waste of time for the writers to write as many players will never get to see them (Owen and Ozan's squabbles, Xenia's history discussion, and various quest comments).

Honestly, I wouldn't have any of these characters get drastically and irrevocably altered until they'd been in at least three or four other quests, and then appeared in a Grandmaster quest. They shouldn't just be dumped merely because some J-mods don't like them or just don't know what to do with them.
