Best? While Guthix Sleeps, easily.

Worst? Birthright of the Dwarves.

Only then can they
Control
themselves and forge their own
Fate .

There was a quest that took you to Entrana, Devious minds I think, I was a clueless about what the quest was about after it finished, as when I started. While there maybe some "bad" stories I do like a story to be memorable in some way, though it can breathe a sigh of relief as a story crashing to a head scratching conclusion that misses a jumper full of threads, just to end it as quickly as possible...well. Yes, I am looking at you Salt in the Wound!

I will hold judgement on "the worst" for now as my SitW concerns maybe addressed in hinted at Asgarnia content. The series had a good hinted at backstory in the style a TV series would have running through out all their episodes to tie it all together. It was not obvious though, but it was there. Something was afoot on a global scale, and they were using the Sea Slugs to help hide it...unfortunately the gods returned and SitW slammed the door in the face rather abruptly. So the place at the bottom of the barrel is still up for grabs.

I'd have to have a serious think about "best quest". I wouldn't want to insult a good quest simply because I was wearing rose tinted glasses. Though Gower quest was certainly a nice break, I got a chuckle out of that quest :)

I really don't see what's so terrible about that quest, there are easily worse ones out there.

It was buggy as hell, the lore was inconsistent, the difficulty was stupid. I really can't think of any good points about the quest.

What quest would be worse?
One small favor was fun in its own way.
Ashdale is somewhat good as a intro.
The King Arthas quests are dated but they're ok as stand alone.
Salt in the Wound was an insult to the slug saga but on its own merits it's fun and has unque mechanics.

I cant think of anything good to say about birthright.

Best?
Ritual of the Mahjarrat

Worst?
Salt in the Wound
Granted, there are a number of quests with issues. Some just with when they were developed, there wasn't much thought put into them. Some there isn't much "plot", just action/combat. Others have had clunky mechanics.
Salt in the Wound takes the cake due to the story and the fact they actually tried to tell a story, let alone cap it. Plus it has plot holes so large you could drive a semi-truck thru them. Say what you will about the Red Axe finale, at least some of the plot elements were plausible (weak, but plausible)
I've said it before, I hope to god that isn't the finale, but is instead we in some sort of mind control and we 'thought' everything that was going on. (Brain Slug induced trippy dream.) And while the Sea Slug Queen is dead, we get to kill off a new queen because ... well ... it was what we were meant to do.

My pet theory is that the pillar was part of the containment spell and the Slug Queen subvert it to escape, thus making it her magic and making her vulnerable to it. A mistake on her part. Of course that would mean that the entire venture we were sent on was complete bull and we were only an expendable distraction. :@

If that were the case, to say I would be angry would be to severely understate it. There would be no where to run and no where to hide. I would find them all, then... It would be legendary!

Birthright was a good quest, but I think it suffered from being released so long after King of the Dwarves. Expectations were too high. If you went and played through the dwarf series from start to finish, you'd probably find that Birthright is actually a pretty good quest, especially now that the bugs have been fixed, and post-quest dialogue has been released.

Anyway, in terms of best quest storyline I think I'd have to go with either The Chosen Commander or One Piercing Note. John A was probably Jagex's best writer, and those two quests are probably his best work.

In terms of worst storyline, stuff like Doric's Quest, Imp Catcher and Monk's Friend are the obvious offenders, but I guess they should be granted leeway since they were released very early on. In terms of recently released quests, I think Salt in the Wound is probably the most offensively bad.

SITW's main issue is probably that the tone is completely different from that of previous entries. Sea Slug, Slug Menace (and to a lesser extend Kennith's Concerns) were relatively serious quests, but SITW goes for a more comedic approach. The second biggest issue was that the plot threads from the previous quests were completey ignored (Slug Prince, Lobsters, Temple Knights, Kennith), and they introduced plot elements that pretty much came from nowhere (Eva, Daemonheim, Slug Citadel).

Couple that with the lorefails, and it was a pretty bad quest. It could maybe be salvaged if it was tied in to a certain Cthulhuesque god of horrors.

In terms of Sixth Age quests, Missing, Presumed Death and Fate of the Gods are probably the worst. Mainly because they didn't really HAVE much of a story.
You never were our brightest star, Khazard. 'Vermin slaughtered like lambs'? What does that even mean?

How Salt in the Wound sequel would start
Talk to Sir Tiffy
Player recounts the odd story, yet victory, over the Slug queen once again.
Sir Tiffy nods his head.
Eva and Kennith arrive.
They explain the "true" version of what happened.
The player is confused.
The Sir Tiffy admits a dark secret he's known from the beginning: you were infected with a baby slug back from the first Slug quest. And ... it's going to turn into the new Slug Queen.
*cutscene where you're knocked out and they begin to try to surgically and magically remove the slugling, but fail*

Now begins a roundabout and epic adventure where the player tries to save themself from the Slug, with some help from Kennith, and maybe even we take the opportunity to plug in some holes from Salt in the Wound. ... and, kill a real Slug Queen.

Then problem with saying salt in the wound is the worst is that the quest itself is pretty fun. It doesn't make sense but it's still fun to do even if people complain about not fighting the slug queen but in truth I think that's just ego. We don't always need a true boss fight.
