DRAGON SMITHS

Dragon metal is the most visible aspect of the Kin's legacy. Lorefully, it is the toughest of the base metals, and the only one (typically) beyond the skill of human smiths. Despite being made with no additional enchantment or blessing, dragon has several traits that set it apart from other metals (11, 30).

-It is resistant to physical heat, remaining cool to the touch even under direct flame
-It repels physical attack
-It does not conduct or obstruct magical energy

Because of this, dragon can only be worked in special forges heated with magical dragonfire, and can only be worked on particular anvils of a magical quality that resists aging or corrosion. Because of its unique attributes, it can also be used to make magical staves and wards, unlike any other base metal.

Dragon equipment has been found in great hidden caches throughout the multiverse (29), and it has been suggested that merely using this equipment is enough to make the Kin stronger (31). Kin who had not yet succumbed to rage likely found their own breath sufficient to heat and work the metal. However, whether for the sake of less-composed Necrosy*tes or perhaps even the benefit of allies, the Kin deemed it necessary to create a dragon forge on Gielinor in the 2nd Age.

The dragon forge is powered by three mithril dragon fire glands, charged with runic energy. These create a dragonfire blast of constant intensity, which is used to heat a crucible of magma. This flows down to the main forge, which is surrounded by pristine anvils. It is possible these have been enchanted by the Kin to sit, like they do (32), outside the flow of time.

Dwarves are the only other race known to have developed the capacity to work dragon metal. The Blast Fusion Hammer was developed as part of a top secret Dwarven initiative to devise a means to work rare and highly magical materials. Siegl*n*e reveals that the Red Axe had developed schematics to create dragon warhammers, which her shop was able to reproduce, and Santiri, with the benefit of this information, was able to reverse engineer Hreidmar's battlestaves (a relic from the Age of Kings) to create new ones (though the materials are still prohibitively expensive).

It appears that the Red Axe discovered a means of working dragon metal from scratch, developing the BFH to do so. Chaos dwarves (pickaxe) and chaos giants (thrown axe) bear the fruits of their labour. It is unknown if they managed to uncover some secret vein of dragonite deep beneath Gielinor, or if they merely melted down existing dragon artefacts for material.

SOURCES OF DRAGON EQUIPMENT

Most monster drops can be considered a game mechanic (cows don't walk around with chargebows in their bellies). However, a few are lorefully significant, especially for dragon metal.

Monsters:

chaos giants and dwarves: Red Axe

tormented demons: dragon plate armour, and possibly claws, are fused into their bodies. Is this a cruel joke by Lucien, or are these actually elite warriors from Infernus, outfitted from that plane's secret dragon cache?

Revenants: fallen 3rd Age warriors bear the items and artefacts they wore in battle

cyclops: these monsters are hunted because of their proficiency with an eastern weapon, the defender. It is unknown if these come from a hidden Dragonkin cache in the east, or originate with the same ancient, forgotten smiths who perfected tetsu weaponry before their knowledge was lost.

Implings: steal the things we like

Dust devils: Probably not canon, but the dragon chain drop is specifically mentioned by Kuradal

Shops:

Hero's guild
Tyras quartermaster
Legend's Guild
Daga
Jukat
S i e g l i n d e
Santiri

Most shops likely acquire their stocks from antique dealers or treasure hunters who have discovered a forgotten cache of weapons. Jukat gets her dragon swords directly from a cache on Frenesake. And Siegl*n*e and Santiri produce their own items, using manufacturing techniques salvaged from the Red Axe.

GENESIS OF DRAGONS

Dragonkind were created over the course of 100 years in the 1st Age. Some were the product of direct manipulation of existing creatures, most notably the vast lizards indigenous to eastern islands. Some were created by modifying dragon eggs. Some likely had a far more arcane origin. This list breaks down dragonkind into first generation (manipulation of a non-draconic creature), second generation (offspring of a dragon), and third generation (manipulation of an existing dragon), based on known information (5, 7, 9, 10, 22, 27).

First Generation:

Queen Black Dragon: formed by imbuing eggs from giant aquatic reptile (wyrm) with Kerapac's essence

King Black Dragon/Shakorexis: created by an unnamed Dactyl, likely from a different variety of w y r m

W y vern: Very short lived, two legged dragon, unknown genesis

Green, Red, and Blue Dragon: separate Dactyl creations that all likely used the same process, magically imbuing the eggs of an existing creature

Fairy Dragon: Unknown, possibly the result of channeling nebular energies from Zanaris

Second Generation:

Black Dragon: unmodified offspring of QBD and K B D

White Dragon: children of QBD and unknown sire, possibly fairy dragon (intelligent and non-aggressive like Mordaut)

Third Generation:

Mr. Mordaut: unaggressive fusion of QBD egg and fairy dragon, created by Tarake t

Skeletal Wyvern: animated remains of deceased wyverns

Celestial Dragon: White dragons imbued with energy from the abyss by Kerapac, driven insane and outside of time

Metallic Dragon: green, red, or blue dragon eggs, magically infused with metal

Frost Dragon: blue dragons infused with elemental ice energy by Kerapac

THE DAEMONHEIM QUESTION

In 1241 of the 4th Age, disembodied whispers led the Mahjarrat Bilrach to Daemonheim, a Dragonkin Castle he thought abandoned. He set about on a centuries-long quest digging out dungeons to reach the Rift below Daemonheim, a portal or energy source that he thought could return Zamorak to Gielinor.

We now know that Bilrach, even at his best, has struggled with sanity, and confuses centuries for millenia, the past for the present. His journals seem to take credit for the creation of Daemonheim's dungeons. However, hints like those in Chronicle 7, suggest that another entity created the space he was tunneling through, intending it as a safeguard and imbuing chambers with the ability to rearrange themselves at random.

Kerapac is the true master of Daemonheim. He has the ability to control the dungeons and 'lock' certain chambers out of the rotation. It would appear that Kerapac has cycled through hundreds of laboratory spaces, discarding them when they no longer meet his needs, and Bilrach has spent the centuries excavating and furnishing these collapsed rooms.

The Rift is chaotic, mutating creatures, raising the fallen, warping time. It appears to hold aspects of the Dragonkin's power, particularly temporal manipulation. How does this tie in to Kerapac's research? Why is he protecting it?

I would suggest that it is a failed attempt of the Dactyl to replicate the Stone of Jas, either to study or nullify its powers. Portals created from its energy enhance mortal ability, and seem to allow more direct manipulation of living creatures. Observing Kerapac's lab reveals the study of effigies as a major focus, and it raises the question whether effigies are somehow feeding the Rift, or vice versa. If the Kin have managed to tap into the Anima Mundi, or the sleeping Elders themselves, this could be the key to their salvation – or their doom.

ELDER DRAGONS

Stories tell of an ancient race that dwelt on Gielinor before any other. In some arcane way their lifeforce was linked to the life of the world itself; it is written that, as long as the Elder-dragons continue to live, the world shall not end (14).

The first half of this passage describes the Kin remarkably well. Linked as they are to the Stone of Jas, which is in turn the key to unlocking the Anima of a world, they may be more inextricably linked to Gielinor's life force than any other. This raises the question, then – would breaking Jas's Curse also break the Kin? Are they doomed to choose either suffering or death?

And finally – are they indispensable to the Stone? Could the destruction of the Kin be the catalyst needed to wake or hatch the Elders, and begin the next revision?

Or is this really no more than myth?

EASTERN W Y R M S

The colossal Wyrms, of whom today's dragons are pale reflections, turned all the sky to fire(21).

Wyrms provided the base material for the first dragons, but went largely extinct by the end of the 3rd Age, decimated by the God Wars. The original wyrms were mindless, giant water-dwelling lizards, but later wyrms were likely discarded Dactyl projects, which differed from dragons in a few key ways~

-Mindless, no self awareness
-Much larger size, closer to the QBD
-Serpentine, with vestigal or non-existent limbs

These may have been captured and tamed by armies of the gods, or even utilized by Necrosy*tes.

The only wyrm we're likely to encounter today is the desert wyrm, a summoning familiar with a draconic head and snake-like body. Stryke***ms, while etymologically similar, are likely unrelated(22), and the abyssal wyrm is lorefully contentious. But, we do have clues to suggest that some wyrms may still exist in the Eastern lands.

-Original wyrms come from islands in the east - e.g. Fossil Island

-Jade statues depict creature very similar to desert wyrm

-Azure portal and upgraded shipwright depict Seiryu the azure dragon, a creature from the Shield region that perfectly matches the description of a wyrm

-Navigator's book and notice boards around POP depict a draconic head

-Storehouse, stocked exclusively with eastern goods, includes a mounted red dragon head

-Missions may encounter Tianlong the dragon in the Pincers

-Ashdale stone carvings perfectly depict same creature as POP jade statue

This suggests that the Dragonkin may have once had a presence in the Wushankos, and raises the possibility of undiscovered settlements hidden in its islands.

STRAY THOUGHTS

Bilrach credits the Kin with ending "the Great Wars." Is this his addled mind conflating the late 3rd/early 4th Age, or could the Kin actually have been instrumental in decimating Zamorak's forces , and leaving him so weak by the end of the God Wars (thus helping end them)?

The layout of the eight-point compass bears some spatial similarity to the eight eyes of an Elder's face.

Runite dragons are likely coming to Kethsi - did the Necrosy*tes bring them there as warbeasts?

Were Necrosy*tes reduced to using physical keys because they could no longer master the barrier/containment scripts that the Dactyl used so easily?

Kerapac the Observer - what does he observe?

Where all the Dragonkin women at?
