Most of us are probably thinking he wanted more power, so he can ascend to Elder Godhood. But that seems a bit too boring.

Also, the Stone doesn't instantly elevate one to godhood. Lucien was constantly juicing himself up with it, and by RotM he still hadn't become a god - the Edicts would have cast him out. Plus, the power threshold between Tier 2 and Tier 1 is likely much greater than any other Tier, so it would take ages. Lastly, why would Zaros want the Dragonkin on his back?

Now, I've heard that the Stone is an unhatched Elder God egg. I'm still not sure how the whole Elder God hatching thing works, so please enlighten me. But what if Zaros wanted to somehow transfer his essence - along with the core of Mah - into the Egg in the hopes that he would be reborn as an Elder God?

It was still a source of knowledge. It was still a big source of power.
Even if he couldn't ascend further, it might have given him knowledge on how to do things like create life or manipulate it further (something he experimented with, but never succeeded at).

Plus it would keep the Stone out of the hands of others.

1. To keep it out of the young gods' hands so as to avert war.

2. To potentially help him ascend to welder godhood.

3. To execute his 'more targeted' strike he wanted to use to wake the elders at some point in the future.

Zaros: No. The stone should be mine! It is vital to my...
Seren: I know know why you need it brother, which is exactly why I have taken it from you.

Elder Godhood.
You never were our brightest star, Khazard. 'Vermin slaughtered like lambs'? What does that even mean?

Maybe you should actually, y'know, read what I wrote instead of only replying to the title and ultimately contributing nothing.

Yeah, this has generally been my theory. Zaros would try to "hatch" with the the egg, and I could see the Core of Mah being a substitute. I'm sure the Core is very similar in nature to the Stone, but it's been corrupted, presumably by Wen. For now, I think Zaros' best chance would be to try and clean the Core.

There really is no purpose is theorizing at this point. It's been established for over a year that he wanted it to become an Elder.
Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.

Elder Godhood.

But use a few excuses as a "smoke screen" to trick/manipulate the player first why HE SHOULD BE THE ONE TO ONLY HAVE THE STONE.

Everybody knows The Dragonkin will hunt all the "false users" down and every time the stone is touched The Dragonkin get stronger. It's kinda of...."poker" face that Zaros want to increase or somehow use the Stone without having the Dragonkin to hunt him down.

Zaros from fate of gods one of his dialog to Char= -the dragonkin cannot grow too strong before we are placed to deal with them.

He wanted Elder Godhood, yes, but not by directly touching the Stone. Instead, he was going to cause a big disturbance in the anima present in the Heart that would wake the Elders up. This plan failed when Kerapac appeared and shone a ray of anima straight into the Stone, causing it to explode. But then we killed Sliske and then Jas stirs a bit in her sleep and brings us, Zaros and Seren to her.

Now Zaros doesn't even need the Stone; the timing of this was perfect for him. He went up and asked to ascend to Elder godhood, then got rejected for not being able to create life from nothing. Apparently tier 2s can't ascend as Elders are a completely and utterly different league of their own, born with their ability to create life. This can be further established with Guthix, who ascended to tier 4 or 5, then learned of anima from Seren before he found a bunch of artefacts and jumped up to tier 2.

I'm not sure if Zaros can ascend to become an Elder, or how he'll do it, but we know he's trying right now. I will admit I was disappointed with his attitude that day and didn't agree with some of his actions, but I will continue to follow his philosophy.
