Aside from some minor nitpicks, this is looking a lot better.
Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.
What a lovely thread
. It's fun thinking back to the early days of lore, when there were only a handful of us taking actual interest, and even less still around today.
A handful of random points that spring to mind back in 2007/2008:
Back then, there were specific threads for the main quest lines: Cunningfox was the elf man, Anntostein(spelling probably completely off) was the Cave Goblin expert, and Yuccon was ran FUN as a general information deposit (arguably with a Mahjarrat focus). Atilla had his threads on metaphysical and magical properties of the planes of Gielinor.
The Scrying Pool very much so branched off from FUN, I remember the discussions for the name in the FUN thread. The chat was initially a friend's chat, but that was purely due to the fact the official clan system we know of today didn't exist. The day the clan system came out the clan was created officially, with over 200 members on day one.
While this isn't anything important, it's something a bit comical...
Back when the BtS was axed, and all our future content news came from weekly Twitter hints and J-mod information, almost every single week someone would always find a way to think the hint referred to Ritual of the Mahjarrat. There was an insane amount of hype for RotM in the aftermath of WGS and everyone involved in the lore community at the time was on-edge with anticipation.
I remember the week dungeon maps were released (before then, there was only a world map featuring the overworld), the weekly hint about it mentioned something along the lines of "a way to find a path through the dark" or something. So naturally, this
had
to be RotM in some players' minds. When the update came and it was only dungeon maps, you could almost hear the sound of dreams shattering from across the community (except for those who didn't believe it reasonably-pointed to RotM, of course).
Of course, I do remember how Moe or Robo would come along to point-out how flawed people were being by erroneously assuming RotM was due-out for the next week, week after week. People nowadays think the hype and anticipation for RoP is high, but it doesn't even come close to the wild speculation and buildup RotM had between 2008 and 2011.
Come to think of it, it's surprising that RotM is remembered fondly, given how often massively-hyped updates tend to make players' expectations hit unachievable levels.

That... makes me a bit sad that I wasn't really involved with lore until 2012
back in 2011, I thought mahjarrat were dudes with turbans in al kharid for some reason
Honestly, be grateful. The lore community used to be awful...so much so that the faction warring was actually preferable to the seething personal hatred that preceded it.

Hmm, I loved the early days - before any wiki, when there were so few of us, and several of us staked out our areas of expertise, when it was still unclear even whether the Mahjarrat constituted a race or might have been a tribe of human sorcerers. I don't remember much seething hatred; there weren't enough of us for that, and too many theories to develop.
Hi Attila, good to see you still about, thanks for checking the name!
Also, for anyone interested in what the lore was actually like back in 2008, a thread still exists containing the lore as it was back in 2008. You can see it
here.
