Goldmage, * think you're really onto something with your second point. It could be that Vanescula had Safalaan reared in the expectation that she could use him to help her usurp Drakan. To manipulate him as an adult, she feeds him little bits of information about his past which Safalaan craves so much. In return, he performs a task for Vanescula, not knowing that it is not for the Myreque's benefit but for Vanescula alone.
Also, the timing of her sending off Safalaan is interesting to say the least. Just as Vanstrom reveals Safalaan's royal, Icyene heritage, Vanescula sends him away without giving the Myreque any hint of his destination. Perhaps one reason for doing so was that she didn't want the player to tell Safalaan about this, as it would have broken her monopoly of knowledge about Safalaan's past and therefore left her without the ability to manipulate him.
Other possibilities to consider:
1. Information war - If I remember correctly, Safalaan was receiving visions about his past before Vanescula wrote a letter to him. These could be generate simply by his own mind, Vanescula... or another source. Perhaps someone out there (*cough* Efaritay) is sending him these visions to counter Vanescula's influence?
2. Safalaan is double-crossing Vanescula - Safalaan might be fully aware of Vanescula's dark intentions but is actually taking advantage of Vanescula's plan to eliminate Drakan. The Myreque don't stand a chance of winning the war by themselves, so he's taking his chances with Vanescula in an intelligent way. This would explain why he left the Myreque so abruptly; he needs to appear as if he's going along with Vanescula's plan to the letter.

As for becoming a member, I will only pay up once the next Myreque quest is released. I don't like Runescape anymore, but I'm a die-hard fan of the Myreque.
