In answer to Pur3's Vanstrom question, I've expressed my theories on his origin before (Vanstrom's, not Pur3's!).
The first one, that he is Safalaan's father and sacrificed himself into vampyrism to save his son, requires him to have been human. I think it's pretty plausible.
The second theory is a bit more far-fetched but I still like it. It's the one about Vanstrom being a special golem created by Drakan in order to have a powerful, loyal servant. In this case I guess you could say he is an original vampyre. I'm more inclined to describe such a being as not a vampyre at all, and certainly not human either.
Of course, it's equally plausible that, as others of you have suggested, that Vanstrom was once an Icyene, or that he is an original vampyre. Either could fit the facts. Ana really does have so many things she could do with this series!

Freolin, I never saw your father-son theory before. That's brilliant! It would add so much pathos to Vanstrom's character.
The only problem is how Ivan Strom links in to this if he does.

I believe Ivan Strom and Vanstrom aren't really related. After all there isn't much to tie them together besides the name. I'm more inclined to thinking Safalaan is somehow related to Ivan.
Still don't know what that mystery castle is :S

Let's have a look at the facts about Vanstrom Klause, Ivan Strom and Safalaan Hallow.
# Vanstrom
- Was an 'ancient' Vampyre (Vertida) meaning that he is a few centuries old at least.
- Was a very high-ranking Vampyre.
- Is dead.
- Is responsible for "allowing Safalaan to live but without his memory of his past".
# Safalaan
- Is the son of a human man Queen Efaritay, making him at least centuries old too.
- Has no recollection of his past.
- Has special powers and visions.
# Ivan Strom
- Is a young lad (Veliaf).
- Is an orphan.
- Has no memory of his parents.
- Is a pious Saradominist but with a few disagreements which the teachings of the church (Drezel).
- Has 'special powers' due to his faith (Harold).
- Is known to the Vampyres and is a high-priority target.
- Safety a 'special charge' of Veliaf.
* Was a young teenager in Legacy of Blood.
The last point is somewhat suspect because it comes from a T S Church novel and not the game itself. However, if it's true, and I suspect it is, then there's no way that he could be Vanstrom's son due to the age gap between them.
Something else just came to me. Both Safalaan and Vanescula were familiar enough with the same pendant of Drakan to infuse it with power. Perhaps Safalaan was raised in House Drakan as a child (perhaps as an orphan). Perhaps Vanstrom was a good man at the time who was forced to serve the Drakans as an advisor (like Charos was) and protected Safalaan by hiding his identity as the child of Efaritay. When his true identity was discovered by the Vampyres, Vanstrom was able to evacuate the child. As Freolin says, this may have cost Vanstrom his humanity. Note that this doesn't necessarily make him the father.
