Why, it was serious, of course. Sliske, as a dark "foil" of sorts to the World Guardian (only, y'know, much more clever), is my favorite character and the aforementioned quest was the culmination of centuries of meticulous planning by a metaphorical grandmaster. Hence the bittersweet ending: Even when he "lost," he won. Why? Simple. He's chess' wild card -- a [black] knight.
