I would guess the destruction of Forinthry did more than simply annihilate the region, more like it caused some sort of nuclear/volcanic winter. Wildlife is sparse, flora is unable to flourish and any remnants are literally fossils of an old era. Only post-destruction did dark lifeforms make it their home (slayer mobs, bandits, rogues, undead).
The Wilderness clearly is just that, a desolate wasteland. Anything that surfaces is a relic from previous ages. Particularly why 'One of a Kind' was so enjoyable, it wasn't just a quest, but a field-trip history lesson. Take a peek at the lore behind Necronium, it is quite interesting, even if it isn't in-game/canon yet.
