Competition for ores can make mining almost unbearable at peak hours. Similar skills, such as woodcutting and fishing, don't really suffer from this problem (save for yew trees). It might therefore be worth to consider
personalizing ore availability
, so that when someone mines a rock that rock only becomes depleted to that player and not to others. Ore respawn and/or mining rate could be adjusted as compensation.
Adding in Dark Stone house layout for construction would be nice. Find a way to incorporate it into oldschool. Wouldn't change gameplay and easy add. I;d love a darker tone for my house.

Terrible idea. Then you would see multiple people mining the same mithril/addy/rune rocks making the prices drop by a lot
"Ore respawn and/or mining rate could be adjusted as compensation". The idea is that each miner would still get as much ore per hour; it would basically just make it so that it doesn't matter what world you are on or what time of day it is when you mine. I, for one, am tired of having to hop constantly.
But you do have a point, as it could make it so that more people decide to train mining, which
would
increase the total ore supply. I was, however, thinking mainly of ores such as iron and coal which is used for training and to a large extent dropped anyway, so there is probably not too much of a risk. But there might be a point in excluding some of the more expensive ores, especially rune.
