Not sure if this would count, but what about the scam where you have a pair of scammers; one selling an item for a price and another claiming to buy the same item for say 2x how much the seller wants? When the victim buys from the seller, either the other guy ignores his trade requests or the scammers log out. Obviously, it's one of those if it's too good to be true it probably is things.
I'd say the easiest way to avoid ANY scam is to be patient at the trade screen and do your research. Failing at that, getting scammed is entirely the victim's fault. Do as much as you can to avoid making yourself prone to being tricked out of your items and your cash, because there are a lot of dishonest players out there. Also, I tend to notice people that use the forums are less likely to scam. Lastly, beware of low leveled accounts. Not saying "OMG all level 3s are scammers!", but some people create level 3 accounts purely to scam others or have difficult to remember names. Thankfully, right-click reporting averts that.
So in summary, be smart, do your research, and be on your guard.
