"How did Jagex survive in the past when they only required $5 for membership. Jesus Christ, the amount they're sucking out of their players now... IDK how they came out with actual-worth-while updates back then. One of the old updates easily tops 10 of the recent ones."
Simple. They didn't spend all their time on marketing and promotional gimmicks, they spent all their time making a good game and keeping it fair. Because it was fair, because it was good, because they respected their players, because they said they would never let people buy their way ahead, word of mouth advertising was enough to make Runescape grow and grow.
That's what you do when you want a game to grow and become more and more successful - you make it good, you make it fair, you listen to your players, you make your players more important than your short term profit.
Or, as Jagex have done, you can suddenly change tack, you can start lying to your players, you can ignore their complaints, treat them like idiots, and try to milk every last cent out of them before they quit and the game shuts down. Word of mouth advertising doesn't work any more - because nobody will recommend to their friends a game that lies to it's customers, squeezes every last dollar out of them, and uses this money not to make even better updates, but to line the investor's pockets, while they put out less content updates than they did before they started rolling in cash.
That's what you do when you don't care about growing a game or even making it survive in the long term - you lie to your players and grab all the cash you can.
