(continued)
The old Jagex-run Runescape Wiki was a failed project intended to get back at the Runescape wikia. At the time, Jagex didn't see eye-to-eye with fan sites and wanted to have absolute control over Runescape. Unfortunately, this ended the existence of the old Knowledge Base without attracting a sufficient number of users away from the Runescape wikia. Obviously, this failed hence why that wiki had to be shut down.
What is being done with the new wikis is different because Jagex is working
WITH
their fans not against them. Furthermore, Jagex is providing funds to help the editors at the OSRS and RS3 wikis break the stranglehold Fandom has over its user base. Unless you have a good adblocker you're guaranteed to be inundated with ads while using a wiki. To my knowledge, no other creator or publisher of a given franchise has ever provided this level of support to a third-party fansite.
The only other Fandom-based wikis I can think of with sufficient manpower and support to break away are the WoW wiki and Wookiepedia. However, they're not doing anything about Fandom's tyranny and are just towing the line. The RS community has by far one of the most robust and informative wikis out there. A successful break away from Fandom would be the black eye they richly deserve. Please don't ruin it.
Edit: Yes, I do find it a bit sleazy that only a handful of people will be awarded the Wikian title. However, given how so many people use RS wikis it comes as no surprise they have so much clout with Jagex. Just don't give stroke the egos of the wiki editors and things should be fine.
