Runescape membership now costs more/month than Final Fantasy 11 subscription, a game that continues to turn a profit 16 years after release despite a present playerbase smaller than RS3's and no microtransactions.
You're $11/month OVER the price of Free to Play MMO's, with a comparable amount of microtransactions.
You're just $4/month below the price of leading MMO's like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14, games that have far fewer microtransactions, much, much higher production value, and arguably a better record of actually delivering large updates on time and on quality in recent memory. At the present rate of increase, you'll be even with them price-wise in two to four years.
I just fail to see how increasing subscription costs AND pushing MTX harder and harder (while also making said MTX more expensive) is viable long term given the competition in the field? The practice is not only anti-consumer, but imo Runescape does not have the quality of content or content release to charge premium-game subscription amounts while also pushing MTX as hard as a truly free to play or buy to play game.
If this heralded a permanent cutback in MTX focus, I'd be all for it. But it won't.
