No.
I have never seen the term "Runescape Expansions" coined before. Nor have I ever had an inkling that there would be content/areas within the game which had to be paid for in addition to the Membership we already pay. Which is why I'm asking the question.

They referred to them as Expansions at RuneFest as well. They said they wouldn't be an additional cost, they're just expansions because they'll be bigger updates that teams get long to work on. ..snip ...

The mere addition of the word "Expansion" to the Jagex vocabulary is enough to set alarm bells ringing for me, given all that the word implies in relation to the gaming industry.

What was said 6 months ago may have been subject to revision since. It would be nice to receive current JMod reassurance that we will not be required to pay additional sums for major new content. Particularly since the majority of the playerbase did not attend Runefest.

Gratz.

"The arrival of RuneScape Expansions this year marks a significant change in how the game evolves"

Expansions.
These usually have to be paid for separately.

...significant change in how the game evolves.
Does this mean Runescape will be evolving into the sort of cash generating game where major new content has to be bought/paid for in addition to membership?

We announced expansions at RuneFest last year - they are larger development releases, focused around themes or specific areas of content. They are not extra content to purchased separately. The first of these is The Golden City of Menaphos.

Fair enough, although the presentation was streamed. Didn't need to attend to see it.

"further explore the potential of more experiences within the RuneScape universe"

Very interesting. If this means more games like Chronicle & Idle Adventures I'd love to see a Armies of Gielinor rework! :o

Congratz, I wish you well.

I hope you will be tackling some of the lingering issues like getting rid of the constant NXT pop up and getting rid of this “secrecy” idea that has been suggested.

Have you thought of having a reorganisation of the RS3 management whilst you are at it? I much preferred the times when Mod Mark was in charge, your replacements unfortunately haven’t stacked up well and I feel nowadays we see more excuses than work from them.
