If I were truly a failing Chinese mining company, which I find totally unbelievable can even exist except on paper due to them being Chinese government, I wouldn't even hesitate to create lots of characters with great stats and start selling them. They could still prevent the general population from doing so because they would be able to know who was real and who was fake. Wouldn't really make a difference because at least 90% of RS players cheat regularly based off what I have witnessed.
Maybe the new owners will also implement the equestrian skill and start selling upgraded mounts. There would be a high demand for them so it is perfect for micro transactions which will start popping up all over the place after they take over.
Not to mention the ad banner that was gone for being a member returning but this time it wont be a single add banner but lots of small ones cluttering up the game space. Of course for a new premium membership they could remove certain ones. Maybe the gold-super-premium membership would allow you to sell your character. Maybe the elite-gold-super-premium membership will allow you permanent exp increases of some percentage in one skill of choice which can then be upgraded to other skills for a mere 9.99 a skill.
It would be nice to be able to sell our characters though.
Edit: Of course we will sell our characters through the new player exchange that Jagex will implement so Jagex could get a 10% commission on the sale. Which equates to 100% on their created character.

Selling characters? I think only WoW is doing it, but they sell them for real money and pocket all of it.
Allowing characters to be traded freely among players is still considered a sin by many online gamers. But raising and selling mounts/pets is not uncommon. So is selling xp from players to players by way of xp balls exists in even better known games like Eve and EQ.
See? There are always many "holier than thou" game developers heavily abusing MTX which Jagex doesn't do. Even if the new Jagex owner tries to monetize the similar ways, they will only be copycats.
I meant for real money. I am all in for that part though. I heard some people pay upwards of 10k for uber characters....
Edit: Here's an idea, you got to pay to be non-pk. World wide pk otherwise. (exception of banks and churches)

Then you are talking about something similar to the RMAH in Diablo. Some people like it, some don't but it doesn't seem to be a profitable idea from Blizzard's side in the end.
Real money trading between players is not overwhelmly uncommon in the East since they don't have much a concept of recurring subscription. Everything is microtransaction anyway. But this is not probably what a game relies mostly on subscription will try.
