They'd have to learn it from scratch, as I said its only available and used at Jagex HQ. No one else would have knowledge of how its programmed as its not in a typically known language.
If you knew more about the subject then it wold be more apparent as to why this is a big issue.

Clarify this: you believe the 300M does NOT cover the code used on runescape? You really believe they're going to pay that much money and not own the rights to it all?

That's what it sounds like and as such I don't have to wait any time at all for a good laugh. rofl

Seriously though.. you seem under the impression that nobody in China is smart enough to code a game.. any game.. but especially this simplistic one that's called runescape (which, in case you've forgotten... some youngsters in the states at one point were perfectly able to mimic it.. they made a private server.. remember) and that only those currently working for jagex are capable of doing the job.. lmao this could be the rudest awakening you've ever encountered in your life.

That's not what I said at all, or even inferred. Clearly you don't know much about programming.

They were able to copy it, not make it. They had to learn from scratch, as it is unique code.

Rudest awakening? hardly, I've talked with plenty of people who have no idea about programming.

Being bought BY the government and needing government APPROVAL are two completely separate things.

Its not impossible for them to move the company, sure. Its just HUGELY impractical and will cost far ore money than it will save. So if we assume they want to at least keep their money or make a profit, they wont move the company/game.

Oh, I quite agree that it's very unlikely that Jagex will shut its doors, throwing many UK programmers out of work, and be moved lock, stock, and barrel to China.

But the investors aren't just investing in Jagex, they would be obtaining control over it. And they're in China, which means, ultimately, that the government of China has control over them.

So why didn't they buy out a Chinese software company?

To move it out of state, this protects it from any economic downfall that may occur.

You could say the same about any country really, but this is still located in the UK so it would fall under that jurisdiction first and foremost.

The Chinese government does not have control over companies in China, not even companies owned by the Chinese people living there. A misconception about Communism in China is everything is owned by the government. It is simply not true anymore.

The Chinese government has the rights to investigate companies doing business in China. But this is not unusual since FBI and Scotland Yard have the same rights to investigate their respective regional subjects with reasons too.

The Chinese government also has the rights to ask for digital data stored in China, but again they will have a legal reason for it. That's one of the key reasons many people believe why Apple refused the FBI's request to create a non-existing program to hack a terrorist's iPhone since it would have opened a door for the Chinese government to file the same request to hack all the iPhone data stored in China. But again, they must have a very legitimate reason to exercise such regulatory rights.

Hi everyone,

I do understand that a potential acquisition by a Chinese company at first glance would be a nice deal for the current shareholders. However, I do have some serious doubts about the negative effects this could have for the future of the game when the game is ultimately owned by Chinese shareholders.

Personally I'd rather pay my membership only with bonds in the future and not by cash when the acquisition by a Chinese company will be succesful. When I pay for my membership I expect that this money will go to the UK shareholders, UK tax authorities and UK employees. I don't like the idea that this money goes to China. However, this is just the opinion of me as an individual.

How would I ever explain to my friends that I play a 'Chinese' game?

One of the reasons that I like the game is simply because it's an UK company, and I like the UK, so keep it UK!

For further questions you can send me a personal message.

Kind regards,

Velixje0

The company (Jagex) hasn't been UK owned since late 2010. American investors took controlling interest when Andrew Gower sold out.

Seems to me that if the game is worth playing, who owns it shouldn't be an issue.

To each his own I suppose.
