40% of all players have bought gold... well... why am I not surprised?
Ever since buyable spins have been introduced, Jagex is engaged in RWT (spare me the weaseling) and gold selling. Until then, buying gold was mostly immoral because players cheated against other players. Since then, buying gold from a (cheaper) gold farmer just meant cheating Jagex out of an extra profit. It didn't take an economy genius to predict that many players would be far less reluctant to engage in RWT. (In fact, I did predict this outcome more than a year ago.)
So the sellout policy backfired. Badly. Buying your way up has now become socially acceptable in the game - spin and other advantage buyers are no longer being frowned upon, spin boycotters have become a quaint and diminishing minority (and, yes, since Jagex counts free spin users as sellout policy supporters, this means not using any free spins). Realistically, there's no way to undo this damage.
Since RWT is now an accepted, official part of Runescape, the bonds actually might be a way to keep this game afloat. Let's hope it works.
And, @Mod MMG: Do take some responsibility for the damage you've done to this game and its long term prospects. Learn from your mistakes for a change.
The last thing Runescape needs is another series of greedy bond-sale-boosting "events" that a) replace real content updates (still some 8 quests behind schedule...) and b) scare off the ever fewer remaining players.
