Do standard virus scans reveal the malicious software they use on people's computers to do this?

It depends. There are no viruses on your computer which are DDoSing you per sey, but they can install software that will help them DDoS us. The best thing is to make sure to have a secure computer in the first place :) . Hope this answers your question.

As Mod Jon said, basically the attackers spread malware, often as fake scammy things like 'gold generators' (or something that lures the victim into downloading it). Not only can downloading those dodgy bits of software give the attacker access to your computer, but they can also start using it for their activities like this.

The term most techies use is 'zombies', each hijacked computer being a zombie. Someone hijacking a computer like that using malware is illegal. The owners of the machine sometimes don't even know or notice it is happening... other times, they may notice something is up due to their internet slowing down or computer acting weirdly.

Botnets, the things used in ddos attacks, are hundreds or thousands of those hijacked computers (zombies) - they're all then given an order and attack the target they are given. Imagine being the captain of a zombie horde and trying to take over the world. That's sort of what it is. Lord of the Interwebs - return of the skids. Apart from that would be amusing, whereas DDoSing isn't.

Sometimes people hire servers and use those to attack too, but the more common attacks are through hijacked computers because sometimes people are silly and download silly stuff.

To add to tea lover Mod Jon above in mild technical detail:

@ bad mad ben - DDoSing is basically sending huge and usesless data packets at the servers, forcing them to disconnect and lag for everyone.

A similar comparison is sending fake mail with phony addresses to the post office which only slows down the mail man's job and efficiency, sometimes making him sit down and contemplate on what he is doing in life. :p

They can't get free items and stuff from the game, don't worry.

@ vegancookies - They can't send you viruses or anything from DDoS, no - just flooding you with uselss data (like those countless letters from Hogwarts our parents hid from us as kids).

The reason these attacks don't occur as much as often is because the idiots behind it get caught and face justice.

This might be a stupid question but why do DDosers do it? is it like hacking the game to give themselves items or something?

I'm going to break this up a little bit :P

This might be a stupid question but why do DDosers do it?

They all have different reasons. A lot of them do it for amusement or out of boredom. It's rather sad that they do it in the first place, let alone targeting games. They'd probably have more fun actually playing the games instead...

Sometimes they do it for reactions, which is what the recent 'reptile' group was trying to do.

Okay, so there's a difference between '
Hacking
', '
Hijacking
', and '
DDoSing
'.

Hacking
is actually bypassing security measures, it requires skill of some form and knowledge about network security, among other things. If you meet an actual hacker, they're not one of the people posting on twitter saying how scary they are. They've probably got enough of a head not to be public about it. There are whitehats and blackhats. Whitehats are good, they try to help, blackhats are bad, they do bad things and cause grief. There's greyhats too but people tend to be on either one of the two previous sides.

Hijacking
is where an account is stolen, for example via keyloggers. The hijacker hasn't actually broken into a database, they've just basically tricked someone into downloading something and then steal their account. Social engineering is closely tied in with this as hijackers often attempt to recover accounts. It isn't a hacker habit though.

DDoSing
needs absolutely no knowledge whatsoever. It's literally someone sending a lot of packets or requests to a site. They do not gain access to sensitive information and they don't

(continued from above)

actually break into anything.

Best way for me to explain this would be...

If you wanted to disrupt a bus service, you'd gather a crowd of people in the thousands, all queing up to board this one bus. (Hijacked computers, requesting the website to load)

This means the real people who want to go home can't get on that bus - or it is very difficult. It might take them a long time (taking quite a while to load), or it might not happen at all (the bus service closing for the day before they get on the bus). The same is happening with the servers. They're getting so many requests that they can't get every legitimate passenger on board without trouble or them having to wait.

Now, this doesn't mean that you've actually gained access to information. Just because you've made 2000 or so people get on a 50 seat bus, doesn't mean that you are now driving that bus. The bus is still being driven by the bus driver (the person who controls the server still has full control and no unauthorised parties are able to access information), but it's just a very very busy day and they can't respond to everything in time for it to be quick or fluent.
