What freaking good does it do to extend the death time, when you lag-dc constantly and lose your timer anyway? When you have such a punitive, dumbass, over-the-top death loss mechanic, you are obligated to make sure your freaking game works. I have had as many as 7 paid accounts at a time for over 12 years. I am ready to cancel all of them, including my kids' accounts. I am sick of trying to play OS Ironman, which is difficult enough, only to lose all my irreplacable and unbuyable items, because you can't keep your freaking game up, or alter your death mechanic.

tnx for the update Mexk, is anything gonna be done to rectify the situation for the players affected by the DDos attack? maybe like a 5 minute roll back or something? (i was slaying and lost a lot of my higher valued items from the attack) or because of the attack are we kinda getting the sh*t end of the stick on this one?

time to start hiring some better IT guys...or maybe offer the hackers ddosin you a job lol

Have you read my post on the previous page? If you have then you'd realize that hiring "better" IT guys won't solve the problem - not for Jagex and not for any other website. You have ~25.000.000 DNS servers potentially posing as a threat; all of which needs to be patched and updated by their respective owners. This together with ISPs filtering their network traffic to hinder spoofed requests *might* reduce the effects of these attacks.

Please read up on the facts before posting again.

so my real question is, if theres little to nothing jagex can do why are they starting to charge more for membership? and nothing gettin accomplished from it since theres nothing that can be done? and if the game gets crashed on a regular whats the point of updates on an unplayable game?

Yes, bot you could change your damn death mechanic temporarily, so you don't lose things you cannot replace, or have to spend hours earning up to replace. Or quest items that require an hour of scraping up ingredients and walking to replace. . .

Those are two completely different things.

They are no by means connected (though, obviously man-hours will have to be dedicated to solving the server issues, no doubt, and some of that money may be from the increased membership price). The increased membership price is to fund content updates (quests, i.e.) and likely ensure the long-term health of Jagex and RuneScape. Additionally, the price has not been increased in years and including inflation and whatnot it would only be sensible to increase it slightly. I do have to stress that players with older (and cheaper) rates will keep their rates if they continue their membership. You shouldn't really be affected by that.

Hi,

there seem to be a decent amount of misconceptions when it comes to DDoS-attacks. Firstly, it's important to stress that companies such as Microsoft and Sony experienced severe attacks which effectively shut down respectively the XBox Live and Playstation network for several days. Moreover, these networks remain, for the most part, open for similar attacks in the future.

In the recent years we've seen a worrying shift towards DDoS-attackers using amplification techniques to multiply the traffic volume they send (i.e.. DNS reflection where every request from a botnet may be amplified upwards 70x times - thus making it very easy overload the target's server). This is typically done using open and accessible DNS-servers and is thus depending on the owner's ability to update and patch their servers - in other words; very limited what Jagex can do.

Under normal circumstances, server owners (in this case Jagex) would have a few options available to hinder an attack's effect (i.e. automated mitigation, upstream blackholing filtering UDP-traffic, third-party provider (basically add an extra layer) and hardware upgrades), but due to the extreme amount of traffic (300gbps+) produced by the aforementioned attacks it is very limited what they can do.

To solve these issues effectively it would require a worldwide effort from numerous parties. ISPs, for instance, need to filter traffic on their network so that packets with spoofed IPs (source addresses which unreachable packet paths) are automatically rejected.

There is a lot of interesting articles on this topic online, and I'd encourage you to read some of these, if you are interested, to get a better understanding of how it works. All in all however it unfortunately remains limited what Jagex can do, but rest assured they are doing everything possible.

Interesting comment to something which has absolutely nothing to do with Jagex; merely stating the obvious and extremely simple facts about DDoS attacks and how to prevent / initiate them. If you took one minute to read up on this yourself you'd get a much better understanding of it.

If you have nothing constructive to add then please don't post at all; furthermore, that hostile attitude is really not welcome here. Obviously you're entitled to your own opinion, but please attempt to remain respectful in your postings.
