Unfortunately, i have decided not to renew my membership when it expires, the game has become unplayable to me and I am pretty sure thousands of others are feeling the same. I cannot PK, I cannot PvM, skilling to me is horribly boring. So yeah. There is nothing for me to do on here lol. Hope you guys sort it out, and I might come back.. See ya *goes on ps4*

Hmm.. seems particularly bad for me atm, trouble with the whole site and when I do eventually manage to log in to game it's lagging an freezing straight away before getting kicked out altogether.

Has a player's graphical location got anything to do with the severity of these problems? It hasn't been this bad for me before, but a couple of days ago my mate, in a different part of UK, was having the issues I'm having now, when I wasn't having such a hard time with it. I don't understand this stuff very well lol

Hi,

there seem to be a decent amount of misconceptions when it comes to DDoS-attacks. Firstly, it's important to stress that companies such as Microsoft and Sony experienced severe attacks which effectively shut down respectively the XBox Live and Playstation network for several days. Moreover, these networks remain, for the most part, open for similar attacks in the future.

In the recent years we've seen a worrying shift towards DDoS-attackers using amplification techniques to multiply the traffic volume they send (i.e.. DNS reflection where every request from a botnet may be amplified upwards 70x times - thus making it very easy overload the target's server). This is typically done using open and accessible DNS-servers and is thus depending on the owner's ability to update and patch their servers - in other words; very limited what Jagex can do.

Under normal circumstances, server owners (in this case Jagex) would have a few options available to hinder an attack's effect (i.e. automated mitigation, upstream blackholing filtering UDP-traffic, third-party provider (basically add an extra layer) and hardware upgrades), but due to the extreme amount of traffic (300gbps+) produced by the aforementioned attacks it is very limited what they can do.

To solve these issues effectively it would require a worldwide effort from numerous parties. ISPs, for instance, need to filter traffic on their network so that packets with spoofed IPs (source addresses which unreachable packet paths) are automatically rejected.

There is a lot of interesting articles on this topic online, and I'd encourage you to read some of these, if you are interested, to get a better understanding of how it works. All in all however it unfortunately remains limited what Jagex can do, but rest assured they are doing everything possible.

This^
Its so easy to blame Jagex, like always lol. But its obv not Jagex's fault.

Jagex has been known to make 75 million dollars profit per year, let me say that again 75 MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR .

If I ran a game company and made that much money I'd have the best servers and ddos protection available. Jagex is too greedy to invest in better servers/ddos protection, instead they'd rather buy army tanks and stupid **!*....What's wrong with this picture?? You guessed it IVP and/or greed.

@ Jagex, What do you all do with all that profit? It sure as hell isn't spent on good servers or protection for the game, that much is obvious, so where does the money go besides on dumb stuff?

We should all un-subscribe and just play f2p until they decide to do something that'll actually help and not just sit around ignoring everything like they did with the bots for countless years.

they have a responsibility to sort it out however. When people are losing masses of time and effort because the servers are still allowed to be played on when clearly there's a problem, it's frustrating and makes people consider what they're paying for. I love the game however when it's like this it really is a joke. The game should be suspended until this problem is fixed, with a refund for the amount of days it is down.

Jagex are not initiating the problem however they have a responsibility to deal with it, which clearly they are not doing infuriating thousands of people. This has been going on for days now and is becoming quite ridiculous. I really hope the period of time the servers have been playing up is refunded to the customers.

It might be possible to protect against attacks. I have no idea how much it would cost Jagex. Id assume its a big amount of money.
I do know they are trying to fix it, because they obv don't want any of us to stop playing etc.

If anyone wants to know how good Telstra is do some searching on the net. Telstra is one of Jagex's ISP's that's constantly messing up. They have blackouts all the time and it causes rs to lag and dc. Now we have the problem of Telstra + Ddos'ers, which is extremely bad for us paying members.
