Maybe Jagex could think the instructions through next time? It would save some ... oh... let's say: 40 pages of "I don't have a smartphone" and some... 10 pages of "you don't need a smartphone".

What rests is
- people that cannot get it to work properly
- people with concern about vulnerability to hacking and stealing
both of which still need to be answered.

Thank you,
Miss Muis

I see these as players responsibilities. Players are responsible for the security of their account, always has been and always will be. In the beginning there was just your account name and pass-word. Then Jagex added JAG as a gesture of goodwill.

They did not have to do this as like said, security is our responsibility. As it turns out, this JAG is creating a lot of work for CST, so they provide the option to use authenticator and then remove JAG.

Not willing or being unable to use authenticator will mean you will have to use your username and pass-word again, as like before.

So my advise to people who can't get it to work is, try and find someone who can help with this. To people who have concerns about hacking and stealing, read up on security and get your PC secure. I find it odd that people want a game company to look after their PC's security....... O_o

If all you are going to do is re-post what other people said, copy the solutions that others have put foreward, and criticize and attack people who don't share your point of view then please stop posting here. The rest of us are trying to share actual information, encourage and offer solutions, and air our concerns. The space you take up with meanness and slander could be much better used.

Dear Mod William/Jagex,

I have just set up the Runescape Authenticator. So far this seems to be a great update for the game. I know many people who have been hacked off of key loggers etc. This update will definitely help make accounts more secure and easier to protect. As you probably are aware there are plenty of fake Runescapes. Mainly linked from a Youtube video about a "giveaway". Hackers/scammers can grab your ******** off these websites when you try to log in. This addition is going to help protect against things like that. I have only had the Authenticator for a few days as it has just launched. But I can see already it has a positive effect on my account security and that of many other players. Keep up the good work.

Sincerely Rs Master XC,

Why are you getting rid of the JAG? You say it’s underused but what about those of us who do use it, how will our accounts be protected I shouldn’t have to download something from a third-party in order to play one of my favorite games. A Zarosian Adventure

This is stupid! JAG is FINE. I don't have a smartphone, like many of these people, so without this "authenticator" my account will now be in MORE danger when it was just fine before. STUPID MOVE.

I am having a problem with setting up the Authenticator. I type in the code that shows up on my phone and click on "Finish", but I keep getting a message saying," Sorry, the code you entered was incorrect. Please try again. If you are sure you entered the correct code, please check the clock on your phone is set to the correct time." I know that I am putting in the right code, so what does it mean by checking to make sure the clock on my phone is correct? I am on Eastern Daylight Savings Time, -04:00 GMT. The time is 18:28. Is it saying to be on GMT? Please, help me. :(

Never mind. I fixed it. I rescanned the barcode, and entered the code given to me and it worked. Must of been a glitch. :P

LOL, till now most people said "I don't have a smartphone"

I sometimes copy the solutions that others have put forward as it seems 99% of the people on here don't read further than the first post. and as a result regurgitate nonsense.

I don't criticize and attack people who don't share my point of view. I criticize people who don't read and keep posting nonsense. It is not my point of view that authenticator can be installed on a lot of other things then just a smartphone, it is not my point of view, it is a fact!

Who are the rest of us? you? LOL. Till now I mostly see posts wanting Jagex to solve their issues. What is this slander you talk about? As far as I know till now I only told the truth, and indeed, that sometimes hurt!

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but you can use the "Google Authenticator" app in Windows 8.

Go to the Windows 8 store and type "Google Authenticator", Then install.

Follow the setup instructions on the runscape website.

There is a QR scan code, but click the link that says "not scanning properly" and it will give you a long code. Highlight this and press C*RL+C.

Open google authenticator in Windows 8, then pres the "+" Symbol on the top right hand side.

Under account name enter "Runescape", then under special key press C*RL+V

Now whenever you need a key, just open the google authenticator app.
