Breaking it down, some people like this. More people don't.
Instead of offering as a choice you, (Jagex) demand we change.
There was no warning, no poll, no options.

The best solution to this whole thing would be to leave JAG in place for those of us that like it, and add the new option for those who want/understand it. I have read this entire thread and percentage wise, less than 10% of the people posting here agree with these changes completely. In most cases even the ones who like the new security advocate leaving JAG in place for those of us who want it.
I strongly advise those of you who do change to this new set up to do a bit of research on the net and check out some of the actual problems documented with it.
You might be un-pleasantly surprised.
If, as you say Jagex, you are trying to look out for the average player, I would like to see the demographics that define your idea of " average". As near as I can tell, this is in no way, directed at the "average" anything. After almost 10 years of playing this game, it is my opinion that in a lot of cases you make changes for the sake of making changes. A lot of the things you have done in the past end up being poorly thought through, badly implemented, and completely unnecessary. ( the current situation being an excellent example) And somewhere down the road, you end up retracting said changes. So why not do the smart thing to start with and if you really think this is for the best, offer it as a choice/option. Let it prove itself to the community. And after a while people will change of their own accord. Contrary to your belief, we are not all drooling idiots. We can work things out for ourselves. The fact that you are making this game LESS accessable to the general population, screams elitest mentality to me. NO security system is 100%. And it doesnt matter what the reason is that a person might not want to change to this new system. IT IS THEIR CHOICE!

GG JAGEX, shouldn't we (the players) get to choose our security options? isn't that why we have a polling system in-game? L2UseItBrah
y'all have basically thrown the majority of players under the figurative bus..

Please ditch the new system or have ya stupid authenticator ALONGSIDE our beloved JAG :)

You hit it on the head with your feedback, it seems there will not be an option and without an option I will most likely discontinue my playing of Runescape seeing that I do not have a smart phone nor a second computer

I don't know whether this has already been asked or whether I am missing something, but my problem with this is as follows:

You said that if we have this set up and then get a new phone, we need to have an e-mail sent so that we can reset the system so that we can use the new phone.
Now, I want to know how will I be able to ask for that e-mail to be sent? Can I ask for it off any computer or does it have to be an already authorised computer?

If the former, then of course this is worse than JAG as hackers only need to know my email ******** to then reset the system and use their phone to get into my account, but with JAG they would still need to know the answers to the recovery questions.

If the latter, then this will really ***** some people over as if something bad happens in which they lose both their phone and computer, such as a fire or burglary, then how will they gain access to their account? They don't have an authorised computer to reset the system for their new phone, and they don't have a phone they can use to authorise their new computer.

If I am missing something, please let me know and answer my problem.

LOL! You quit runescape because of a new security system, you're the worst out of all of those whiners out there :/

I checked the clock of my phone against the clock of my laptop and they were an absolute match, but the example-box won't approve. So I won't be switching anytime soon. Imagine I lock myself out! Besides, somehow I cannot get back to the page with the example-box. I just keep finding images of that page, but not the actual thing. Anyway, glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem.

Another issue: how is this safer than Jag? I mean, I have seen in my clan that JAG isn't entirely waterproof, but than again, I've never seen software that is. Every system has a leaky spot somewhere, either in the program or in the procedures. And I do not feel quite safe with this authenticator. Maybe it's safer against strangers, but certainly not against people that know you, your thought process and your habits.

done it took but a few minutes thought it was a great idea protecting my account to a high standared ..........but after reading some of these post i feel you didnt think it through im lucky having a smart phone , what will those not so fortunate do ?????
