Regardless of what, how or who is the reason for this, you need to get a handle on it. I have had lag and disconnects for quite some time now. But these freezes and kicks are right down annoying.
If this is in fact the reason and it's been going on over a year now, you would think in that time you could come up with a viable option to counter it.
Going on my 7th year playing and I can see leaving over this. What good is the game if I can't play it.

We have recently made a multi-million pound investment in our global IT infrastructure to deal with the continued attacks

A linux box with IP Tables, and someone with good enough 'fu' to fly it would do a treat.
Because it causes so much financial damage, it is amazing how much people can be fooled into needing to spend...and are willing to hand over.

The words of someone who has clearly never dealt with a significant denial of service attack.

Anything short of services provided by someone who can leverage large-scale ISP cooperation to stop multi-gigabit traffic before it completely overwhelms your little Linux box (assuming your ISP isn't completely taken offline first) cannot help you on this Internet, unfortunately. These services are neither simple, nor cheap.

Do you work for Jagex?.. If not then you should, epic PR!

PS.. ***'on man, we all know Jagex is full of BS.

Nope. Jagex would never hire me. I've played this game since December 2001, and I've done (and still do) my fair share of criticizing Jagex. However, in that same time period, I've worked for three companies, attended two colleges, and amassed a bit of life experience that a lot of these kids don't have (with regards to how the real world works). I'm still a curmudgeon; I'm just an experienced curmudgeon now.

With regards to the issue at hand, I don't think a lot of people are giving Jagex a fair shake. However, Jagex has gotten creative with the truth enough times in the past that this sentiment is not wholly unexpected. Just as well, I'm rather invlolved in the topic of network security, so it annoys me when ignorant people make ignorant statements without doing their due-dilligence. Willful stupidity across the spectrum, be it from Jagex or the players, is a problem that could be easily solved if enough people actually took the time to read.

Since when can a multigigabit ddos knock out a ISP?

Are we back in the 90's? I forget sometimes, the knowledge on this forum seems to come from wiki pages that haven't been edited for years.

If Jagex were facing a small group of large-scale ddos'ers, they would have been caught very quickly. The problem arises when you have many smaller-scale attacks between intermittent large-scale attacks, this is when you need mitigating severs; it's all about the timing and method not about the raw size.

Something about this is off. I won't accuse MMG of lying however I don't understand how a multimillion organization has allowed illegal businesses to DDoS them for over a year now when a simple Google search floods you with services to prevent such a thing. At the very least just one of these would be enough to handle the bratty kids that, as you've claimed, have been DDoS attacking you.

It's lose lose, either there have been lies or your security has been so astoundingly flimsy that people asinine enough to brag about doing so online are capable of disrupting the game on this kind of scale.

Either way this article was clearly made to create a scapegoat, true or not, and frankly it hasn't made me feel very secure about the game.

1. It has not been happening for over a year, it's been happening since last month. I have had ZERO connectivity issues in the last year.

2. They aren't bratty kids, they are an organized group of people from RWT businesses in foreign countries capable of much more than a couple of bratty kids.

1. Lucky you, however the same doesn't apply to every single player. Also if you're saying that Jagex jumped the gun that fast on admitting that they've been getting DDoSed then that's an entirely new issue to worry about.

On a completely related note just because you dislike ketchup does not make ketchup bad.

2. Quoted from this same exact thread,

"This has also resulted in an increase in immature users at malicious forums like 'bugabuse' DDoSing and stealing from many individual players, taking credit for RuneScape service outages."

I spy two contradictions! Do you?
