God, doesnt anyone seem to call Bs on this? seems like everyone is kissing up to jagex.
If a company can't keep some severs up i find that illogical that a couple of guys could ddos a whole company, a company that should have the wealth to maintain some decent severs.

Try comprehending and answering this: Why would IVP, Spectrum and Raine invest millions of pounds in infrastructure in a game with a rapidly declining membership?

Thank you MMG (Mark Gerhard) for letting us know whats going on and what your doing about it, as a member of the RuneScape Community it gives us a all morale boost when you are bringing up an important issue and that your people out there are on it.

Especially in the forums, where we don't see as many mods post as we would like to.

Thank you for finally giving us an official response to the lag issues, would love to see a message on the front page or something sooner when these things become too frequent, as they often have been in the last few weeks.

Or a sticky forum that could let players know the reliability of the servers on any given time.

I'm going to answer this in several parts.

First and foremost, without the hard figures that only Jagex can supply, 'rapidly' is a rather subjective and over-used word. I'm not going to get into a 'made up stats' match here, but over the lifetime of any subscription-based service, there are going to be peaks and valleys. It's been well-documented that the biggest chunk of players who are no longer online were bots. Believe it or don't, it's up to you.

Secondly, why would they invest millions of pounds in infrastructure on an intellectual property that, as a service, is still quite profitable? Beats the hell out of me. This is a game that was started by a handful of people in a dorm room. Jagex could literally fire 95% of their staff, market the game 'AS-IS', and still turn a profit from it. This is where you would definitely see a 'rapidly declining userbase'; however, it would still remain profitable simply because of those in the installed base who are willing to continue paying to play it.

Thirdly, on the subject of subjective words, I think MMG's use of 'recently' qualifies under this as well. In business, recently could mean yesterday, or it could mean this year, or it could mean this fiscal quarter. Without a specific time period, it's very hard to quantify as to how recent this money was spent. It's not like MMG walked into the boardroom yesterday and said, 'Hey mates, I need three million quid to patch up the servers. Get on it, aye?' and they automatically cut him a check.

From a business perspective, I think the 'millions invested' is over a period of time, which includes not only pure cash, but significant man-hours and equipment as well. Just from a man-hours perspective alone, the dollars can add up extremely fast. As an example, say you've got twenty developers working on the issue. We'll be generous and say each dev makes 80k on the year. For the sake of the argument, we'll quantify MMG's 'recently' statement as the most recent fiscal quarter. Ignoring that the most recent fiscal quarter isn't over, a single quarter is three months, which is 20k of pay per dev. This translates into 400k in man-hour cost alone. This isn't including hardware swapping, host connection upgrades, bandwidth chewed through because of the attacks, and numerous other costs.

In conclusion, please educate yourself on not only the various aspects of running a business, but the specific problem at hand and the many overlying factors that influence said problem (which, conveniently enough, these factors have been touched on throughout the thread).
