If anything, Jagex may deserve some slight admonishment simply for the length of time it took them to address the issue. However, from a network security perspective, I can certainly understand why they didn't; if you can help it, you never acknowledge flaws or holes in the network infrastructure. You might as well leave your keys in your car and tell someone on skid row where you parked it.

For those of you who are anti-Jagex by trade, please at least read up on some of the topics highlighted in this thread (gold farming industry, how to deal with DDoS attacks, network security, etc.). In the grand scope, it doesn't make sense for Jagex to intentionally hemorrhage users by providing lackluster service. While there are methods to limit disruption, someone who is dead-set on creating a disturbance will find a way to do so.

Thanks for the acknowledgement of a very irritating problem. It's always good to know that you're aware of this stuff and are working on it.

DDoSers are as much scum for any game as botters and gold sellers. Let's hope they're caught and prosecuted ASAP.

I've got zero time for any of them.

Thank you for finally posting this.

I've know Runescape gets DDOS'd heavily for a while now. It was particularly bad when Vorago came out. (was the cause of the game black-outs on day of release) though, the problem had been around before then.

The thing is DDOSing is such an easy thing to do with loads of sites offering botnets to shoot at someone (players streaming (which is why they removed last logged on IP) ) or something (Runescape and pretty much any other gaming website/server)

Some are little 13 year old kids trolling streamers, some are people who used to bot trying to get revenge on Jagex. And some are Goldfarmers knowing they are losing.

I hope the internet as a whole can bunch together to strengthen networks against this sort of attack by spreading the load about. (remember recently google's servers were used to spread the power of an attack on an internet security company)

The illegal way of sorting the problem is bending the barrel back at the gun. Until a proper defence is thought of, only thing they can do is buy bigger and bigger servers.

DDOS'ers are prosecuted, quite heavily recently to try and act as a deterrent. So don't do it!

People calling this lies are either people doing it themselves and just hate on Jagex or naive people who know nothing about technology and think DDOS'ing is only happening when it makes national news.

When I made a forum thread about this a while back, my thread got a lot of hate from the above idiots. Thank you Jagex for going public about this.

As everyone else has said, I really appreciate how open Jagex has been lately. Probably one of the biggest reasons I stuck around is because of this, and because of how much you guys listen to our feedback.
