Hm. yeah 200m accounts, itself pretty good! I wrote a database of customers for work and I couldn't even make up 200m people in the time RS has been running, so yeah pretty good!
Now a short sentence about how the vast majority of them are bots blah blah.
OK so i've posted pretty much what everyone else has said, now I think something that i _think_ noone else has thought of, or at least posted. I got bored of reading repetitive posts by page 5 or so...
Why do you think Jagex has made announcements and updates which a 2-year old could figure out are going to be (and have been!) wildly unpopular! From the little i know or think i know about the politics and inner workings of JaGex as a company, they make money, and exceptionally well so we can deduce that they are not 2 year olds, despite the opinions of many posters here!
My point is that Jagex is in the control of a boardroom and shareholders and that means the one thing that matters is profit. so they need to either:
Increase the number of customers they have,
Increase the regularity of the purchases the customers make or
Increase the average spend of each customer.
These are the only ways to increase profits. In fact, by increasing each of there by aroung 20% will see their overall profits rise by about 100%, but thats a whole other lecture...
They have already increased the regularity and amount of many customers spends via the horrible Squeal of Fortune and the whole 'automatic subscription which you have to cancel' thing.
What they need to do now is establish a relatively accurate number of people who actually do play the game and are likely to continue purchasing membership. They can't do this from their server records because, as many of you have pointed out, there are too many bots, throwaways etc do be able to distinguish from real players just from logon records.
