I've been playing this game on this account on-and-off, mostly in free to play, since around the early summer of 2007. I've seen drastic changes in that time, some of it good, too much of it bad, and some of it just plain ugly. I think Jagex has done well to listen to the players who want 2006 RuneScape back, because I think it's around that time that Jagex started to alienate the people of that old school mindset even as new players came in in the process of reinventing the culture of the game.
I support this idea a million percent, but with a word of caution: it's still not going to be the same exact experience. The community has changed a lot since those days as well, so just be aware, it's probably not going to be 100% like the good old days. But hey, I think it will also bring a lot of players back into the game, now that there's an option to have the old school 'scape back. They might stay, they might go; nobody can really tell, because Time isn't a person. Another word of caution is that this could distract Jagex from actual game content - I tend to take their promises worth a grain of salt, because they sometimes do tend to overestimate costs of projects in terms of time and energy allocated. Surely all they have to do for this backup is test it for a week or two, fix some glitches, and maybe tweak one or two little things. Still, though, this might take longer than they initially say, and it might also take away from them developing present/future RS.
I hope this will be successful, but on the other hand I can't imagine that there would be a whole lot of opposition to this.
