This is all very strange, and it very easily proves that you can't please everybody all of the time. After reading maybe 50 pages of replies in this thread, there are already a lot of arguments starting (perhaps by people who didn't carefully read the announcement). A lot of people are arguing over which year was the best, over rares and starting the economy from scratch, and over simple updates that will or will not be included in an August 2007 image. Just like any other update, there are mixed opinions.
I think it also shows the ungrateful side of some of the user base. It caught me off guard that 2007 servers are even being offered, considering the stance that Jagex has usually taken when defending major updates that have seemingly upset a lot of players. I was under the impression that the old days were dead, so I think those who are stuck in nostalgia should be grateful that this is even being considered.
I started my account in 2004, so I too have fond memories of the 'good old days'. I think that these memories are so fond simply because these were the years when I first started out my RuneScape journey, so everything was new and everything was exciting. I wasn't familiar with everything that the game had to offer at that point. Since then, I have seen the game go through many updates - some of which I have liked and others which I have liked less - but still the core of the game remained the same, and a lot of things have gotten a lot better.
Personally, I probably won't be playing the 2007 servers, though I'm not yet sure if I support or do not support this decision. On one hand, I can't see a harm in bringing back a couple of old servers to appease the masses, especially if it will cost additional membership fees, Jagex will hire a new development team to manage it, and all players will start again separate from the main game. For me though, I think I'll just continue playing RuneScape 2013 and look forward to the future...
