I get the "hating" on Jagex being someone who has since long ago quit and only checks in on the game now and then however..
all games derive from immitating what others did before.. it's even what have brought our advancements in science forward so quickly, innovations upon existing game mechanics that get mixed and mashed. Ideally taking elements people enjoy and replacing the ones we dislike for new ones or other existing ones.
This used to be an indie title (and for some reason it's still marked as one after jagex bought it) and the two guys behind it are just like any other innovative indie developers, just like Notch for that matter. The blocky build and retro style is as explained before not unique to minecraft, it isn't even the 2nd or 3rd game in its genre.
I'm not buying the game even though I know for a fact that this game has very fun elements in it because I disagree with Jagex's (or maybe we should just refer to them as "inside venture partners" by this point.. oh and don't get me started on all the games IVP has ruined) previous actions. Simply bad business however I played it back in the alpha and personally donated through paypal to help the developers out. Of course Jagex bought it to capitalize on this previously successful indie & completely free to play game, it's what companies do. Just remember for whatever is done/has been done to the game the original concept and gameplay is brilliant innovation done by Ben and Mathias who supposedly are still working on the game but I have a feeling it may very well be with a gun pointed to the back by Mark Gerhard himself, just kidding but you get what I mean.
PS: The old community, unhappy with the direction AoS has taken is working on bringing back the old version as far as I've heard. You could possibly look into that, not giving any links obviously but I saw it on w*kipedia

awesome! its good to see JAGeX make an awesome game better, instead of milking there players of money and killing off the communities. Shame its not Runescape

Hey , ive played ace of spades , its really good fps - minecraft/team fortress idea ..
why would you say its a copy .. they just made it becasue these two games are popular so why not combine them ? , it would be the same if LoL company came out with someting like runescape youd say ( runescape cop-out) , you guys are way too mad , you think into things way too much .. maybe its just for some fun !
question to jagex : Advertising on runescape is good way to get people to play the game. BUT , this will make runescapers die out and immigrate to that game , so does this justify the DYING of runescape ? , or are you just milking what RS has left and directing them to another game , inb4 next Ace of spades update is ( squeal of fortune and solomons Comes to Ace of spades , check out our new customizable guns , and use your 2 spins a day to get some extra xp !)
Runescape has been a really good game for me , but with the addition of the EoC , there has , been without doubt a player decrease , no one can deny it, and that around 80% of player base is bots , what are you going to do to combat this , ( bot watch only progressing to adv bots , ive seen no report/progress of anything) .
