You might not now, but you will in the future - Jagex Accounts (currently in closed beta, soon to be in open beta and eventually becoming mandatory) will use an email address to login with.

Many of the recent changes to the login flow on the website over the past few months have been in preparation for that system, since all logins will be through the website flow, so I'd expect things will continue to change as Jagex gets more feedback from those using the system.

I get that technically signing in with a mail address that is distinct from a username is safer - someone can't just randomly target you because they saw you in game, for example.

But I also agree that it's a pain in the butt.

More people def know my email than my username. I dont have an email specifically for rs. So if anything this makes it more unsafe, in fact i dont even know which email i really use for RS. I usually delete the messages from jagex when i pay for mems. I watch 2 emails daily. So no its def not safer.

Jagex hasn't announced that yet, but when they do, it will be well in advance and will be posted to the homepage of both versions of RuneScape.

You don't have to have an email specifically for RuneScape - what you really need is for the email that is attached to your RuneScape account to be secure (different password, preferably with MFA enabled). The goal should be that only you can get into your email account.

There are many reasons why people choose to make a separate one (one not known by others, less likely to be in a database breach, etc.), but its up to you if that is something you want to do or not. Whatever it is, it just has to be secure.

With the new system, if you change your email address, you will use that new email address to log in (rather than the original one) - so that's an added security benefit in itself over the current system that we have where your 'username' (whether it be an email or a legacy username) can't be changed.

In any case, this is probably straying away a bit from the original rant (sorry), so back to the login page and the extra button - those of us with older username logins will find that we will be transitioning over eventually and this new button, while it might be an annoying extra step, likely was implemented with a specific purpose at reducing confusion at some point in the process.

you can make one right now, then it will be even safer than before.

you dont know which email you use for rs? that is very unsafe... how are you going to recover if need be if you dont know which email information is being sent to? it seems you need to make a new email right now and use that one...

so yes this is 100% more safe than what you are currently with lol
