I get the impression migration from the current launcher to the beta is a one-way trip, yeah?

Sort of - there are two betas going on at the same time and they are somewhat related but shouldn't be confused:

- Jagex Launcher beta - as described here: https://www.jagex.com/en-GB/launcher

That's been in beta for a year now. While the Jagex Launcher will eventually become the only way to launch the game and play, right now you can use either the Jagex Launcher to log into the game or just open the clients the way you're used to. Using the launcher does not prevent you from still logging in the old way, its an alternative option.

The launcher shouldn't cause any performance issues as its still launching the same client at the end of the day, its just changing how you log into the game session for that client.

- Jagex Account beta - as described here .

The Jagex Account beta IS a 1 way process - once you've migrated, the old login info is no longer valid. Additionally, once you've migrated, you're required to use the Jagex Launcher, you log into the Jagex Launcher with your Jagex Account, and all of your characters are under 1 account.

Its worth noting, by the time Jagex Accounts make it to open beta, any bugs with it should have been resolved. From my understanding, the purposes of the betas are more to gather feedback about migration processes so that they can be in the best state possible before the masses use them - its why we've seen so many little changes to the login flow on the website over the last few months.

I get that technically signing in with a mail address that is distinct from a username is safer - someone can't just randomly target you because they saw you in game, for example.

But I also agree that it's a pain in the butt.

Nobody knows my username login. Well few people do. Most don't even remember me so it's all good.

Sounds terribly annoying and needlessly tedious.

I have played RS for over 18 1/2 years, and I have never been hacked.

Never.

This looming E-mail login process should be optional, not mandatory.

I am not a fan of being forced to do something I have no need for.

it wont be tedious, you wont need to type it in every time.

just because you have never been hacked now, doesnt mean you dont need better security. its still worth it overall.

unfortunately by the sounds of it the only way to do it, is to do it this way which means log in usernames will be no more.

That may be the case if you allow the login to remember you, and you don't have more than one 'Scaper in your household. That is not the case here.

Your concern is appreciated, but I promise you I'm good. I always use the same computer with enhanced security. I would never use 3rd party sites or software, nor would I use mobile to play RS - if I even owned a mobile device.

The last big change to how we access the game was the forced conversion from Java to NXT several years ago. That did not go as smoothly as it should have. The first full day of using NXT was also the first time I experienced total game freeze, simply by trying to buy Herblore supplies in Taverley. There would be more game freezes to come, despite the fact I was using a computer six years newer than the one I used to play RS in Java, which never froze on me.

It also wasn't until NXT that I encountered invisible nodes in the Runespan and buildings with missing wall textures. To be fair, it has been quite some time since I last saw an untextured wall. Teleports used to be a real mess in NXT, but these have also improved. They still aren't quite as smooth as they were in Java. Then there is the lag.

I could go on, but those are the highlights. So pardon me for not being giddy with anticipation over another forced game access change.

You can buy XP. You can't buy experience.

I'd rather just sign in with username, the '@' is highly easy to search from a keylogger. My account has survived many keyloggers in java files but my passwords are so 'messy' they get skipped over as a cat walking on the keyboard....

And my username isn't proper english spelling so again, word searches on keyloggers don't get triggered.....

Jagex has a bad track record on making security worse, not better. Just look at JAG(Jagex account guardian) was 10x better than this auth stuff, but they...'weakened' it by displaying how many chars it contains and first letter......nice, anyone that knows me, can now hack me....Glad jagex's IQ is in check, they probably want me to lose my account from a hacking so i start out my membership at higher fees.......

Not to mention, everyone is selling our e-mail details to whom we will never find out....hence why i use Temp Mail/ID gens for any site i don't need/ require a 'serious' account on.

where has the security become worse?

the people selling out email information we have to accept in terms and conditions.

if you have an email that is only for jagex account nothing else. then this wont be a problem.

If nobody else has already commented, look below the button, it has an option to log in with your username instead. Bob says:
A bank PIN will keep your items secure.
Always check the second trade screen.
Never trade in the Wilderness!
Keep your computer keylogger-free and virus scanned.
Never give your password out to anyone.

While that is true. What is annoying about it (at least for me) though is how you HAVE TO CLICK IT EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU LOG IN instead of it simply remembering that this player is one who always wants to log in using their username. :@
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Oh right, fair enough. Yeah, I'd prefer username to be default too. I'm guessing they have more accounts that are logging in via email and that's why it takes priority. Hmm... Bob says:

So two separate but related betas. I see. Thank you. It seems the Jagex Account beta is the one I had in mind.

Good luck with it all. We'll see what happens.
I've been putting out fire with gasoline! ^_^
