Well, old friends, it seems the end is near, and so we face the final curtain. And, if I can toot my own horn, it wouldn’t be the end of the forums (and more importantly Rants) without one last drunk on nostalgia post from old 09ag.

First, I’d like to make this post in the interest of preservation. The forums will be read-only in a few short weeks, and gone for good in a couple of months. It is my sincere hope that some internet archivist will save what remains, and that this post can serve as a sort of repository for anyone interested in Rants that might come looking for info in the future.

To preface this, you’ll have to indulge me, because I intend to be melodramatic, though I don’t intend to turn this into one of my analytical essays of yesteryear. You may wonder why I’m shedding virtual tears over a dying internet forum in the age of twitter and discord, but Rants has been a part of my life for over fifteen years, and I had never really considered that there would come a day where it would be gone.

In recent years I haven’t been as frequent a presence as I’ve meant to be. I’m not as young and carefree as I was, and weeks of absence eventually became months as life got in the way. I suspect it’s that way for us all. Despite that, I never imagined there would be a day where I wouldn’t be able to pop by the chat thread and catch up with people who’ve been a part of my life for the better part of two decades, but I guess that time makes fools of us all.

I’ll always look back fondly on the glory days, organizing raids of Jagex Lite, the RRP, fighting for the soul of Rants, every stupid little moment bickering over nothing with all of the lovely people who made this little slice of the internet a community.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised this day is coming, the internet isn’t the place it was back in 2009. Nobody uses forums any more, there are a million better ways to communicate, and get butthurt with Jagex, than the forums. If you’ll allow me though, as a forums boomer, I’d like to quote Brooks Hatlen: the world went and got itself in a damn big hurry.

I’d like to humbly thank everyone who shared this experience with me along the way. People like Corugi, Vexcia, my namesake 07ag, my old nemesis MMH, Shady Nick, Rooh, Ecruteak, Mum, Scouse, Luke, Nat, Chunky Milk, and all the rest that I’ve forgotten over the course of a dozen years and various account name changes. It’s been a hell of a ride, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

If I can make one final request, I’d love to hear any fond memories anyone has of the good old days, put them here and maybe they’ll live on in some way for the next generation of people who enjoy some good old fashioned internet bickering. And if anyone ever wants to hear some rambling stories about a bygone era of the internet when forums were king, and trolls and spammers were on top of the world, I’d be more than happy to regale you with my stories of Rants.

With that, I’ll leave you with the (slightly modified) words of Dylan Thomas:

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rant, rant against the dying of the light.

Farewell old friends, and all the best in the arguments that lay ahead.

TLDR: I’m gonna miss this place.

God rants has been through quite a journey in itself I swear it got removed and reinstated a few times, I remember not sure what year when both rants and compliments got removed and replaced by Game feedback sub-forum, had some memories their.

Rants was always a place to vent steam for many bygone eras of RuneScape where we all rally together and “riot” like with introductions of removal of free trade, eoc being added and squeal of fortune being released.

I can’t really remember the last time I properly was active on the forums it must round the time old school was first released. The forums will always hold a special place in my heart but I honestly think it’s about time it went. *´¨)¸.*´ Kilot ~ Failed RuneScape player.

Some other names I remember (might be adding a few from ID and HLF as I don't remember where I met them), Philphish, TradeMe5kPlz, Squallsy, OrkGold, Froud, Shiavui, You Pick It, Seeker, Dodo, Mooman847, Puggles, Maxs, Sna ky, Isaac B, Zoj, Cyanid, Motherlybear, Kiwi Magic, Lord Bucket, Zordy, Arbitraitor, Win2tank, ChillWithMe, Mark It Zero.

To anyone I missed I'm sorry, it's been a while. But I'll always cherish these memories, even the bad ones I've had. ~ I do not have a signature.

I'd also like to add another name (I'll add more as they come to me): Catweazle and her many incarnations.

Right from my first days I was never made to feel like an outsider here, despite having "a green background" (anyone remember when FMod posts had a full green b/g?)

Although Rants, as with the rest of the forums, has declined over the years, this forum section will always hold some great memories.

I wish I'd saved a pile of screenshots of the stuff that went on in here.

I'll end this post with an extremely cheesy message... it's a quote from a film (5 interent points if you identify it)

I remember when the rants forum exploded over the removal of the wild the first time and with the removal of free trade. Back during the great bot war, the clan I was in at the time used the wild to bot hunt.

We would head to the green dragons dressed in green dragon hide leather, have a ddp++ ready, let the green dragon bots skull on us, then unleash hell with teleblock, ensnare, or ice barrage on them, then unleash the dd p++ special attack. Don't ever think the reason I am peaceful is because I do not know how to be violent.
