It's occurred to me that whilst there are mental health awareness events, there's not really anywhere we can come as a community to discuss it. Of course, if anyone has a specific issue, they may wish to post a thread about it on the General or Off-Topic forum, but as it may be a personal issue they may feel put off from posting such an intimate thread in these locations.

However, if there were a specific forum based solely on mental health, not only could people post advice and personal stories, other players will see that there is a safe space for talking about such issues and may be more likely to share their issues.

During mental health awareness events, the forum should be linked within the game to raise awareness of it's existence.

We have a community led technical support forum, why not a community led mental health support forum too?

While your intentions are good with this suggestion, mental health is a completely different situation, and is significantly at higher risk of causing harm than good. I say this, because someone might give the wrong advice to someone, or say something that offends someone, which could cause someone into further depression or even as a worse case scenario, suicide.

The Official RS Discord used to have a Mental Health channel which was locked behind roles and was used by Jagex and players during those in-game charity events, however was discontinued recently as it was rarely ever used.

I know Mod Kari has given the spotlight to the Mental Health Discord on the RS Homepage Updates like 5 or 6 times more than anyone else now, but even then, I don't think it should be done, for my reasoning below.

While it may be comforting to some that there's a safe place to share your experiences or try to help others, this is the kind of thing best left for professionals, in my opinion.

Because this is a Gaming forum and not a Doctors or Specialist forum for these type of health issues.

As Loki said anyone posting might look ok but deep down maybe not for them if they read some trolls replies or a reply they do not like. It could cause more issues then the blame for anything going wrong would fall on Jagex for allowing that section in the first place. It's also not fair on F-Mods who would be expected to deal with anything others feel might be out of order. F-Mods are not trained in dealing with Mental Health Issues. (Some maybe be but no idea who) We leave it to Jagex's dedicated team.

When Jagex do anything with aweness they have fully trained staff working on it. Which is good for all. Hence the events they put on to help people out.

So having a whole section for me personally is a bad idea as the Forum Community are not qualified in mental health issues.

Thanks for your feedback guys.

I agree that (almost) everyone here will not be qualified to give correct advice on a case-by-case basis.

The perspective I'm looking at this from is how we can share healthy methods of gaming, such as how we allot our schedule, how long we sit at our desks, etc. Right now, there's nowhere we can discuss such things.

Of course there are different levels of mental health. If something gets too extreme, perhaps there should be an instant report button which directs that person to a professional company or charity which specialises in such cases. It could be that when someone posts a specific word, such as "suicide", that post will not be uploaded and they get directed to somewhere that would be more helpful.

For the lesser extreme cases, sometimes people simply just want or need to chat, and this can make a heap of difference.

I understand what you're both saying. If the hurdles can be overcome, would you still be against such a forum?

Sadly Yes. It's my own personal choice really.

I just feel the risk is too much. It only takes 1 bad post on a thread and then something bad happens.

Now if it were an Invite only section that could be monitered by trained Jagex staff thats different kettle of fish.

Jagex makes the calls anyway so who knows.

I do get where you are coming from don't get me wrong. I just think it's not for these forums.

Also at times you may see the odd topic in Off Topic or General chat about someone just wanting to talk about mental health issues etc. Threads don't really last long as either the Op gave up or the replies left upset them.

Perhaps a change in title would assuage the situation.

Something along the lines of "Healthy Gaming Habits" or "Healthy Lifestyle" perhaps. This would encourage people to post positivity rather than negativity, and allow those who may be feeling negative to read and comment on such threads.

There's certainly plenty of knowledge amongst our player base on such topics, and we should be able to share this somehow.

I know there won't be any perfect solution to this, but there never is for difficult topics.

No please do not ... makes those people even more vulnerable in todays world.

Also ... the word 'health' is at the moment a so overused word making everything right now labelled unhealthy.

+1

No support.

Like said above, this is a gaming forum not a health one so it'll be best to seek out a doctor for this sort of issues not random ppl online.

We did have a mental health thread dedicated to your opening post in Off Topic Forum. That thread went well, as far as I can remember it was a very positive receiving post, lots of support, can't recall any negatives, if there was I'm sure it was dealt with fast. I feel either look for this thread and keep it active or make your on thread, maintain it and keep it active :)

Good luck :)

Now you are getting somewhere. Not saying from my own prospective it will work but a title does go a long long way to set the tone of the thread.

I also agree with you that it's a very difficult topic and have to take baby steps first. ;)
