'If someone is photoshopping things to make it look like you said things you didn't, then you can report it on Forum Help. If someone is posting something that you said that you didn't want to be shared...then lesson learned, don't trust that person anymore.'

--

I don't think the intent with this update was for end-users to use the update as a means to post images of in-game conversations that try to show a specific forum user in a negative light in order to attack or flame that forum user.

If the allowance of in-game conversations that allow one end-user to show another end-user in a negative light become common place, then what is to stop someone from posting images of conversations that give the impression of the in-game community at large in a negative light? For example, posting of images of the public conversations that take place in areas such as LRC or GE W2?

Such images, according to the CoC should be moderated.

Using images as a means to 'troll' would be subject to moderation just like 'trolling' with the written word is.

The issue is forum images allows people to potentially post images that aren't real, which leads to conflict with any individuals associated.

This can also be done with the quote system.

I'm a noob with a hat!

It can also be done on Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere else that images exist.

The idea that we shouldn't have images for such a reason is..well, I can't find a single word for it. Idiotic, asinine, foolhardy..

Yeah this kind of behavior can be done with quotes, but forum images are literally adding fuel to the fire. If you haven't been impersonated, it'd be very difficult to understand. I'm impersonated fairly often on other social media platforms, which is another reason I'm against forum images. It's the fact that with this system for new forum images, there were no just rules set for if someone names/shames you within an image that's no longer there. At least with the quote system you can check to see if the quote was really said or not, as opposed to a photoshopped image.

If an image no-longer exists, it's not really possible to enforce any rules upon it.
Any images posted on the forums are subject to the forum's rules of-course, as was set on the release day.

...while catfishing comes to mind, Runescape isn't a dating site anyway, nor would that be something that any mod has the authority to moderate.

Are you implying that a moderator does not have the authority to moderate an image that has been posted in order to deceive the forum community?
I still stand by what I say. Allowing forum moderators to investigate instances of catfishing--which by the way is more specific than 'images that are deceiving'--is not appropriate, as in I would not feel comfortable with them sleuthing around and essentially being stalkers to find out whether it's actually catfishing or not.

Because, how can you prove such a thing? What if the person reporting is trying to get someone's posts hidden to harass them, and is saying that someone's catfishing when they're actually not? There's a reason why screenies can't be used as evidence for something, because the accuser might be biased or have a personal vendetta against someone.

Catfishing also doesn't negatively affect the forum community *overall* unless it becomes identity theft *of another Scaper*. As in, the catfisher is using pictures of someone else from the forums or Runescape who is now having a reputation in the RS community without their consent among people whom they are likely to encounter.

Catfishing using the pictures of someone else off of Runescape isn't as "bad" since the area of influence for this person is fortunately very far away.

Flarefox, if someone posts a screenie that implies they're you, that isn't identity theft, that's plagiarism, and if they put words in your mouth to make you look bad, then it's because they dislike you enough for you to be their target. Think about that. Maybe re-evaluate how you treat other people, why this is happening to you, at the very least why this person did what he did.

If someone doesn't like the context of a photoshopped image that isn't there anymore, there needs to be some sort of precedent that should be followed to accompany this new forum image update.

Not sure how catfishing relates to my scenario. Apparently the photo shopped image had to do with an alt of mine doing agility, when in reality nobody knows my Agility alts.. Are you saying that photoshopped images on the forums are an okay thing? If false information was photoshopped about your in-game character, and no action was taken, would you look at the forum image system in such a good way? There could at least be precedents made for such events that happen on the forums.

To clarify, I did not reply to that 'portion' of your post' for several reasons, but nice try though using just that 'portion' of your post in the above quote to give the reader the impression that was the 'portion' of your post that I was replying to.

As noted in your reply on 38.5, it does appear that you have chosen to use that 'portion' of your post & the above quote as a means to further discuss that 'topic' rather than the topic at hand.

The reason that I did not reply to that 'portion' of your post is because, in my opinion, that 'portion' of your post & the bulk of your reply on 38.5 has nothing do with the concern Flarefox posted about.

Campers at FH ftw...

(insert image of campers sitting by a tent roasting marshmallows around a fire at the Forum Help Campground)

:D

anyway....

The image did exist though, people saw it, might have even commented on it. Just because it is gone after the fact doesn't mean it didn't exist.

Should 'if an image no-longer exists' be a free pass for image posting trolls who might post an offending image, camp FH to see if it gets reported & then go & delete it when it does get reported in order to bypass being moderated?

- Countermeasure -

Should a forum user have to take a screen shot of a offending image 'first' since it would show a time stamp, upload it, then come back to forums & post that mirror image of the offending image to the forum thread with a comment on it before reporting it to FH?

take an image of the image at the time you find it offensive, before it is removed, then it is no longer "gone" and thus can be submitted as evidence.

flare if it makes you feel any better, I had never heard of you before this string of comments, so if false information was floating around it likely didn't get very far. I still have a hard time seeing how it is a bad thing though upon reading the above. Yes it can be misused, but does that make it a bad thing? it is a tool, nothing more, and not a particularly destructive tool in my opinion. moderators will be watching, and most people on forums either have so much time invested in game/forums that they would not take such risks, or they are using an alt. Then they are just some no-name random person with an opinion or intent that they can't even self-validate enough to use their actual account. And there-fore should hold little weight or be disregarded entirely.

With a system as new as this, more rules need to come into play. The forums doesn't have to be like other social media platforms. It's like if someone said look at this image of luckydevil calling someone a noob, and it turns out it was a photoshopped version of you calling someone a noob. That's literally what the situation is. It's not tremendously devastating, it's just of annoyance.
